Does anyone else think Nirvana is severely over-rated nowadays

I was in high school when Nirvana broke onto the music scene. I really didn't think they were that great then, and I think they're extremely overrated. I'm personally getting tired of them popping up on these best of lists. Sure, the lists themselves are meaningless, but still...there were better bands in my opinion that don't get nearly as much credit.

If you asked me what band I like the best out of the "grunge" era, my vote now would have to go to Alice in Chains.

I'm so inconsiderate, i do believe my dog is sleeping in the other room and i just put on Nirvana's In Utero cd... as loud as the stereo goes! He'll live.

Overrated? No way. A band who is at the forefront of a musical movement deserves special respect. Soundgarden came before Nirvana but Nirvana was more melodic; they set the course for music of the 90's in a huge way. Soundgarden never set a course. Not that that's bad. And how many albums has Nirvana sold? Why so many? Because so many people like their music even to this very day. Sadly they also brought on the death of true "grunge" music. But what they did in their day should be highly respected in secular music circles today.

certain bands should not exist without a member who meant so much to the band. Kurt Cobain was a HUGE part of Nirvana. Today they'd not be Nirvana without him.

Tis better to move on with life and new projects and cherish that which is in the past.

I don't know, Alice in Chains was before Nirvana as well, and perhaps had the best vocal parts (not that this really matters). Cantrell and Staley's intertwined harmonies were certainly more complex, and in my opinion, prettier than Cobain's. Nevermind is why Nirvana grew to cult status. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was easier to embrace by the mainstream than a song like "Man in the Box" by Chains or "Outshined" by Soundgarden. Honestly, how many people own Incesticide?

Good Post. Reps for you friend.

I love Nirvana. When they came out I was uhh... in grade oh well nevermind. I was in elementary school. I think.... yup.... anywho... I remember when Cobain killed himself. I so badly wanted to start listening to Nirvana. But there was no way that my parents were going to let me listen to them. So I didnt listen to them. Until about 2 years ago when I started to re-discover music that I didnt get to discover when I was younger. (Ie: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc...)
Anywayw... are they overrated.... maybe. Do I appreciate what they did for music. Absolutely. I appreciate their sound. There is something to be said about a simple band who makes great music. Cobain was a gifted artist and that showed in his music.
