cloudy is right. I don't think the context from the 10 commandments is what Christians today think it is.
I suspect that when the 10 commandments says to not use the Lord's name in vain, they are referring to pronouncing the tetragrammaton YHWH. Ancient people thought that knowing the true name of something gave you power. When Adam gave all the animals their names, that is probably referring to their true names so that Adam would have power over the animals. My understanding is that Jews never pronounced YHWH except under special circumstances in a whisper, so nobody knows how it is supposed to be pronounced.
So using the Lord's name in vain would be using the power of God available through His true name casually. That is my guess.
If you come across atheists who do that, they're not doing it because they're atheists. They're doing it because they're awful people. Tell them so, and find someone who's worthy of your time and company. But, even when Atheists do it I get offended because they won't stop when you ask them to please stop. They'll just keep on going because they know it'll make you upset and because to them, there's no harm in doing it because there is no God and Jesus is just a figment of our imaginations. You'd think Atheists would at least respect somebody's religious beliefs and not instigate Christians.
Also,
found what I was looking for in my ancient tattered notes,
phew, a job and halv shipmates.
And you shall not profane My Holy Name; Leviticus 19:12,
You shall not swear falsely by My Name,
thereby profaning the Name of your God, I am the Lord.
Sins of spite,
one who transgresses God's command, not for pleasure or for the sake of perceived benefits,
but simply to demonstrate indifference for God's Words,
has desecrated God's Name,
having displayed open disregard for His wishes.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain - WikipediaIn the Hebrew Bible, as well as in the Ancient Near East and throughout classical antiquity more generally, an oath is a conditional self-curse invoking deities that are asked to inflict punishment on the oath-breaker. There are numerous examples in the Book of Samuel of people strengthening their statements or promises with the phrase, "As surely as Yahweh lives …" [8] and such statements are referred to in Jeremiah as well. The value of invoking punishment from God was based on the belief that God cannot be deceived or evaded. For example, a narrative in the Book of Numbers describes how such an oath is to be administered by a priest to a woman suspected of adultery, with the expectation that the accompanying curse will have no effect on an innocent person
The issue of swearing an oath by the name of some god is also mentioned in this wikipedia article

I very rarely swear; usually only after an injury. Mostly I borrow fake swears from cartoons like Wander Over Yonder, like "flarppin'" and "Oh my Grop!".
Excessive swearing is usually pretty annoying, but it can have a strong comedic effect in the right situations (like Game Grumps or South Park).
If I say "doggone it", is that swearing? What about "fudgesicles"?
Lol, have you seen the South Park episode "It Hits The Fan"? lol.
