Okay so I have a grandmother who cannot stop using the lords name in vain every 13 seconds. She's Catholic and apparently religious but, every time she comes over to visit my mother I cannot help but get offended. My mother is semi the same way only she uses Christs name in vain (She's Catholic/religious too) and I cannot help it but I get extremely offended every time someone uses the Lord's name in vain. Especially those who profess to be Christians or religious. I mean, I don't use the Lords name in vain and I don't see why Christians insist on doing it. The extremely rare time that I do I immediately apologize before anyone even has a chance to say anything. Not that anyone in my family would care if I just blasphemed the name of God over and over again. But, come on. It isn't really all that difficult to not use the Lords name in vain. And To me when a Christian does it they come off as not Christian which makes me hate myself because nobody knows what's in a persons heart but, come on! It's not very loving and respectful to our creator and our savior. Please, don't take our creator or saviors name in vain if you really love them.

But, even when Atheists do it I get offended because they won't stop when you ask them to please stop. They'll just keep on going because they know it'll make you upset and because to them, there's no harm in doing it because there is no God and Jesus is just a figment of our imaginations. You'd think Atheists would at least respect somebody's religious beliefs and not instigate Christians. After all, we as humans should at least get along with each other. But, At least a religious person will say "Oops, I'm sorry." and correct themselves Am I alone on this? I'm curious.

I remember one time a few years back where my coworkers used the LORD's name in vain repeatedly within the break room (at work) so much, it made me literally sick to my stomach whereby I had to walk out of the room (just so that I could feel better).

I once had a bus driver stop the public bus and refuse to continue to drive simply because I asked her if the entrance that was approaching on the right was where the dental office I was schedule to go was located. She angrily ordered me to sit down and not disturb her concentration and held up the bus which was full of passengers for approx. a full minute. Her nasty attitude provoked me to mindlessly blurt out JC and then she started self-righteously lecturing me on not taking the Lord's name in vain.

This is something like what happened in the summer this year,

I got got on a bus outside the Railway station, and as I got on the driver got off,
he refused to drive any further.

I don't know had happened,
but I sat behind some guy that did not seem to be causing any trouble,
but there were 2-3 people shouting at him and saying he should not say things like that.

It seemed he had said something
that had offended the driver.

then the people got off the bus and talked to the driver,

then they got back on and really started to get threatening toward the guy in front of me.
Don't know for sure but from what they were screaming about,

it seemed like he had said something offensive about his religion.

I could not care less, the fact was the bus was going nowhere fast.

the driver refused to drive any further, so it was just to get off the bus and wait for the next.

It would have been stressful if I or another had a plane to catch,

It can get ridiculous at times,

and worse it will become with so much "PC" about.

Well fortunately and Thanks be to God.. We don't have anyone using the Lord's Name in vain in my family... When we gather we have a brief period of prayer say before a meal as we did last Thanksgiving. My Father-in-law is Christian and I'm Baha'i and we get along well.

I don't think there's anything you can do about it if you say are in someone elses home and they use expletives and curses. It's their home and they set the standards. I wouldn't visit them very much however. After I stopped drinking some years ago I didn't feel comfortable visiting my father's home when they drank a lot ... The family seemed to use drinking for every occasion ...when they were sad... when they were happy... so I began to visit less often and only did so when there was a specific purpose.

It bothers me a lot. In fact, I recently had an encounter with my boss where this happened. We were on a Skype call and he was upset about something. In the course of the conversation he let fly the expletive "Jesus F...ing Christ". I came "this close" to just hanging up on him. Next time I'll probably either ask him to tone it down or I'll just hang up. That's beyond the pale.

When reading comments like this, I feel like the only dunce in Juneau who's missed yet another appearance of Sasquatch.
I've been an atheist all my life and all I ever meet are soft-spoken, literate people who find themselves demonized by their communities for failing to be convinced by ancient literature.
Of course, you'll find the occasional abrasive jerk or cruel troll who will keep cursing for no other reasons than to cause offense, but to state, matter-of-factly, as the OP does, that this behavior is typical of the non-religious community is both false and malicious.

I don't like repeated cursing either, whether it includes the name of a deity or not, for I find it vulgar and it usually is indicative of an uncultured mind, but the cry of "offense" to a mere string of words puts me on guard. If one observes societies where a particular religion also has the power of the state, you'll understand my concern.

So let me state it plainly: no one has the right not to be offended. This is what it means to live in a free and open society.

It really give me that nails in the chalkboard feeling when I hear it used as a curse word. I don't like it used literally in vain either like excessively saying "oh my God" and [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] when typing. It's like "Are about to say a prayer right now or...." When somebody says something really shocking I understand someone saying Oh my God. I even have said it but I try to follow it up with "help them" or "please no" that's a short prayer. I just like I say really can't stand it when it is used to curse someone or something.

When I was in Jr High I has someone catch my ballin kickball and I blurted out the Dword. My teacher pulled me to the side and said "you don't have the right to D anything only God does" I never looked at it the same after that.

Used to. Now not so much. Just words. Although I find excessive swearing tiresome. Like dlamberth said, the use of the term in discussion I consider a 'swear'.

I very rarely swear; usually only after an injury. Mostly I borrow fake swears from cartoons like Wander Over Yonder, like "flarppin'" and "Oh my Grop!".

Excessive swearing is usually pretty annoying, but it can have a strong comedic effect in the right situations (like Game Grumps or South Park).

Yes. Swearing can greatly enhance comedy. Some scenes just wouldn't be the same without a properly placed swear word.

I find it most annoying when people swear when angry. It's sad.

I have always considered mentioning JC not as a swear but merely as an exclamation. What I consider swearing is when offensive words are employed such as the one starting with "f" or the starting with "God"
"and ending in "it"". Actually, the situation you mention differs drastically from the one I described in one very essential detail: The driver's reacted to my question about a destination by stopping the bus. It was not reaction to anything offensive that was said.

Haha, why don't you just write what you mean,
otherwise it is like trying to solve a crossword puzzle.

But seriously, it is not always one can avoid certain enviroments,

There is a saying;

"You have to hear much before your ears fall off."

If you are in an unavoidable situation, workplace or such,

Then if you are not careless in your speech, sooner or later other will take notice.
