• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was really under alot of stress yesterday at work, plus I was allergic to the powdered gloves. There were about 8 people working around me. I was itching so bad that I was using something to scrape my arms and neck. I only cut myself alittle bit, I was careful, since the other time when I cut myself, some freaked out. Earlier, I made cutting look like an accident but yesterday I was just scratching myself. What do you think?

I must honestly say that I would worry about someone who did that, especially in front of other people. I don't think there is ever a "bad enough" to need help. If you feel like it is a problem then maybe you do need to talk to someone.
SI is typically defined as damage done intentionally to the body that leaves a mark of some sort for hours.
I don't know if that helps you, but as one who does cut, please don't let it go too long without getting help. It is not an easy thing to overcome.

My prayers are with you! PM anytime if you need to talk. TN

Just a side note - You speak of powdered gloves. Are you in healthcare? Under OSHA most employers must provide you with powder free gloves if you are allergic

Suppose you could just explain you were having an allergic reaction and people would shrug it off. People like the easy way out...especially people whom you are not in a close relationship with. They accept any old excuse.

The real question is why were you doing that? Was it the stress as you seem to allude to. Were you intending to hurt yourself? Cuz if that is the case and you were intending to self harm and you were doing it at work as a friend I AM TELLING YOU that you need to seek some help. Cutting due to stress and cutting in front of others both indicate your Self harm is getting out of control. And if you need someone in real life to tell you that you need help all you need to do is find someone you trust and honestly tell them what is going on. They will tell you the same.

Good luck and praying for you!

I was wearing powdered gloves which I am allergic to and I was cutting boxes and used the sharp instrument to scratch my arms and neck. The cut did get infected but people around didn't even notice. All they care is that I do my work, not that I SI on the job unless it is graphic or something. Everyone else here talks about SI like it's no big deal.

I don't believe you need an answer to what your action was. You know deep down exactly what you were doing.

I gave this advice to someone else but you can try this as well. Come up with a list of 30 different things you can do instead of S.I. even the suttle incidents.

Think things you enjoy. You can even use meditation or imagery of speciall times and places for in the work place where leaving isn't an option.

Do not rationalize your behavior. You only fool yourself. S.I. is personal and has nothing to do with anyone but you save the fact of how your actions impact those around you. It is still your choice to do it and no one elses.
