This is a really good question and thread.

My advice based on my experience with college is this.

When you graduate high school and you do not have a clear path on what you want to do, get a trade skill first. That way, you can better pay for college because your work on the side will make more money and you don't have to take as many loans out. And you can take your time and figure out what you want to do without going into debt.

The number 1 lie teachers and parents tell young people is you will make more money if you go to college. That is only true if you get very specific field (law, medical, engineer, and such). A business degree or "general studies" degree doesn't mean a dang thang. Why go to school for four years, accumulate loans that you will have to pay back (no bankruptcy deletes these), and wind up with a 30K job.

That's good advice.

Yeah, the main thing about school for me is how much it costs.

I definitely wish I would have gone to a trade school in high school. How smart would that have been! I am actually very mad at myself for not doing that when there is one I could have gone to and learned cosmetology or something. It's not exactly what I want to do with my life, but at least I would have an okay job right now as opposed to no job. If only we could go back in time.

And yeah I wish I would have known what I wanted to do when I graduated because now I've spent two years in college not even knowing what I want to do. What a waste of time and money. I've taken classes I don't even really need and I could have already been done and had a degree in something. I don't even want to think about how much my loans are right now. It's ridiculous.

That's nice to know about Trade Skill test. I might refer that to my lil cousin who will enter to college next year.

I just really don't like school and I never have but I know I have to go to college to do anything with my life. Does anybody else feel like this? Do you think that you have to learn to like school like when you're younger? I'm not sure I really know anybody that particularly likes school but it just seems like something you would acquire when you are young. I feel like it has to do with your childhood as to whether you like it or not. Maybe I'm wrong though.

There some aspects of school that I do like. I do enjoy learning some things but I just feel like it's so stressful and it's something that I HAVE to do. I don't like pressure. But, anyway, enough of my rambling. Do you think it's me or is school just not enjoyable??

Until a few years back, I always hated school and never wanted to go to college. It took me seven years after I graduated high school to finally find something that I was interested in enough to go to college for. But when I did go to college, I eventually found that my major was something I was good at. Afterward, I've had many doors open in my circles from being part of that college.

Now I'm going for an advanced degree and really love doing it. I say all that to say this: take time some time to figure out what your academic interests are and then go for that - it's better to do something you're interested in. You could delay entering college for a year while you decide on that - or it may take a few years. You may also just want to enter college immediately if you want to get it done with right away; there's always the possibility that your interests will rise to the surface as you go through many introductory courses and electives.

I wish you all the best.

Thank you for that. I agree with you and I sorta wish that is what I had done. Because really I've wasted a lot of time and money so far going too college for things I changed my mind about. I'm not even sure what I'm doing now is what I want. So I think that is very good advice. The main reason I went straight to college is because for one I thought that is what I was supposed to do, and two my dad always told me I had to go to be able to keep my insurance. Which I guess is true but still...

I honestly hate college. I'm a sophomore engineer, and in 2 weeks I'll be half done. I went to a very conservative christian school for the first year and a half, and it was very judgmental and really bad for my relationship with God so I transferred. I am now at a secular school and its been a lot better, but I still hate going to classes and doing homework. I have only gotten A's and B's, so its not that I'm doing bad, its just constant work and worry for me, and every day I'm just counting down the days till graduation.

some people really enjoy it though

I personally enjoy college. I love meeting new people and a lot of the professors are fun, at least where I'm at. The only thing that I can't stand are all the classes that have nothing to do with what I'm going for as a career. I'm going for my Bachelor's in Social Work. Overall for me it has been a fun experiance. But I understand copletely about the stress. It caused me to get really sick, plus I ended up getting mono for 5 months during my second semester. I think the best part about the college that I attend is the amount of people that I can witness to. I guess college can be fun and enjoyable for some, and not so much for others. For me it's a little bit of both.
