  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We offer evidence that legalized abortion has contributed significantly to recent crime reductions. Crime began to fall roughly 18 years after abortion legalization. The 5 states that allowed abortion in 1970 experienced declines earlier than the rest of the nation, which legalized in 1973 with Roe v. Wade. States with high abortion rates in the 1970s and 1980s experienced greater crime reductions in the 1990s. In high abortion states, only arrests of those born after abortion legalization fall relative to low abortion states. Legalized abortion appears to account for as much as 50 percent of the recent drop in crime.

*Published: Donohue, John J., III and Steven D. Levitt. "The Impact Of Legalized Abortion On Crime," Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2001, v116(2,May), 379-420

The authors argue that by reducing the number of children from the socio-economic classes that have traditionally produced the highest level of crime, you reduce the crime rate.

Definitely.

In other news global warming is cause by the reduction in the international levels of pirates.

Btw I like the way that crime started to fall around 18 years after abortion was introduced. 18 years as everybody knows being crime spree starting age.;)

This is true, but only in the same way that reducing the amount of cars on the road cuts down on traffic jams or similar. Common sense or kookery? America will never reach a consensus, because there's always a "racist" or two advocating this "solution."

Steven Levitt (born 1967) is an American economist best known for his work on crime, in particular on the link between legalized abortion and crime rates.

Winner of the 2003 John Bates Clark Medal, he is the director of the Initiative on Chicago Price Theory at the University of Chicago..........

He attended Saint Paul Academy and Summit School, graduated from Harvard University in 1989, and received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1994.

He is currently the Alvin H. Baum Professor in Economics and the director of the Initiative on Chicago Price Theory at the University of Chicago.

In 2003 he won the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded bi-annually by the American Economic Association to the most promising U.S. economist under the age of 40.

Abortion has reduced potential crime. While I am living, I have the potential to commit crime, even if I never would commit a crime. However, if I cease to exist, that potential for me to commit a crime is gone.

However, to say that abortion has incontrovertibly reduced crime is difficult to measure. If reducing crime is our only goal, then abortion could be a solution. Preemptive war could also be a solution to stopping terrorism.

Is reducing crime our only goal? Is stopping terrorism our only goal?

I'd hope not.

I thought his argument was more along the lines of abortions decrease the number of unwanted children - unwanted children are more likely to commit crimes, ergo abortion decreases crime.

I could be wrong about that tho.

Come on, are pro-abortionists (not pro-choicers) so desperate that they have to resort to this to show why abortion is a good thing?

First off, none of that has to be true at all. Quite a few abortions have also been from the middle class. And quite logically, crime can come from anywhere in any sort of concentration.

Under this concept, if everyone were gay/lesbian, there'd be (minus artificial insemination), no more people in this world and crime would drop 100%, therefore, everyone should be gay/lesbian.

Didn't you hear? New study shows that war, mass killings, and serial murders also cut back on crime rates. It seems that the only thing wrong with this whole "crime situation" is the people. So, we take people out of the equation and voila! No more crime. I'm all for a nuclear holocaust anyway.

Here's another study. The idea that unwanted babies are more likely to turn to a life of crime is fairly reasonable and research seams to back up this idea. I don't see how this can be used as an arguement for or against abortion though... since that argument really centers around where human beingness begins.

I an embryo is a full fleged human being then the increased probablility that the human might turn to a life of crime is still irrelevant. If the embryo isn't fully human yet, then the woman is simply managing her body in accordance with her will. It all centers around when you beleive that cluster of cells constitutes a full fleged human being.
