• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Well saying this slightly tongue in cheek, I think your writing skills are more of a barrier in running a business than AS is. Txt speak in a forum just makes you seem unintelligent, which I'm almost certain you aren't.

And as for those "AS experts" telling you that self-employment is not an option because of your AS, did they elaborate and if so can you share this with us?

Such blanket statements from anyone is not helpful and should be ignored, but if they have detailed and considered points then it's important to consider those and be honest with yourself.

Cheers

Hello,

I suffer from High Functioning Autism and am self-employed. I really struggle to motivate myself some days. I know all the things I need to do to get on with my business, but cannot seem to get down to doing them. For me, this is one of the biggest barriers. The other one is social interaction. Any business needs customers, so customer relationships are very important. Whilst people compliment me on the way I handle customers, it takes a lot out of me. There are times I should communicate with my customers, but I don't.

These are two of the main difficulties I experience in running my own business. Have you thought your specific difficulties through? Have you thought about how you are going to overcome those difficulties? It is important to be realistic. However, it is more important to trust Jesus. If he is encouraging you to go this way, then press on. You learn a lot about trusting Jesus when you live hand-to-mouth!

One of the things I've done is plan for a gradual development of my business. Taking this forward in small steps. This is particularly important financially. I'm building my business without taking loans etc. I started on it part-time, then gradually increased as the work came in.

Finally, if you have some business aspirations and desires. If you believe you can make a go of it, then go for it. Don't worry what the experts say! Our personal barriers are not there to limit us, but to challenge us to break through them. "With God, I can scale a wall!" In the end, if you really want to do this, yet you fail to take that step, you will always regret never having tried.

Also follow general (non-AS specific) self-employment advice. This is found in abundance everywhere so do lots of reading.

Make sure you have investigated the specific market you are seeking to target, to ensure that you will be adequately meeting the demand found in it or stimulating new demand in a well thought out manner.

cheers
