  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I created the following chart based on the appendix in the book 'Who wrote the Bible' by Richard Elliott Friedman.

Documentary hypothesis/Genesis - Religion-wiki

Good work, good effort.

I notice however for the last half of the chart, that the primary evidence for different sources, namely the alternate names of "God" (elohim) and "LORD" (yahweh) are very scarce and don't match the columns.

Here Friedman is no longer dividing the text according to the essential theory, but now engages in conjecture as to sources and also text divisions. Perhaps he has linguistic evidence of another kind for those categorizations, but the theory only seems to hold up well on the face of it for some early sections of Genesis.

I havent studied the hypothesis in-depth and I have no strong feelings one way or the other regarding it. Even if I did have strong feelings about it I wouldnt argue them here or anywhere else. In my articles that I create I just try to present facts. People can and should make up their own minds about these things.

I know that there are other factors beside just the name of God that is used. When I figure out what they are I will highlight them but I have been too busy with other things to dig up the information that I need.
