Exactly. :p Thus difficulty and other factors must come into play to judge the game. Although difficulty alone doesn't make the game good.
Does anyone remember that one fighting game Microsoft made for the original XBox? It was nearly impossible to play, and the difficulty factor was too high. It really bit.
I think the other difference is 2-D and 3-D environments. I dunno know, it just seems that's a noticeable difference and one more thing to have a preference over.

Increased difficulty does not a good game make. All that means is that you need to learn a wider variety of combos and hone your counter abilities better. With SF, it wasn't about that, it was above moving faster, thinking quicker, reacting to each move individually. Instead of combos, you had punches and kicks and your specials (most of which hit for the damage of one fierce kick), and the entire game was formed around those moves alone. It was more about fighting than the routine of "Block enemy combo, launch my own combo, block enemy, rinse, repeat."

If that is true, then why do the game makers keep making the games deeper?

SF got deeper as the series progressed.

SF2:Turbo was a deeper game than MK1 and DoA, and all the other fighting games at that time.
That's why it was better.


The thing that makes DoA4 so special is the fact that have to mix it up.
In most fighting games you could just use a set number of moves/combos over and over, without the fear of being countered.
In DoA4 if you didn't mix it up you would be reversed to death.
