My ethical beliefs effect how and what I play. I invariably choose the 'good' path on any RPG the first time around. I usually play some form of pally in a fantasy setting. On a second play through I will see the dark version but most of the time I don't play to the end. Evil is just so banal.

Interestingly, when I was playing Old Republic I couldn't play a Sith to save my life. Even when I picked what I thought was a good Sith-type response I would gain Light Side points.

I used to only choose the good path, and the good path was usually one set by liberal developers. With adding in homosexuality and crap like that I am sometimes evil according to the game but good IRL. I have come to realization that I am roleplaying good and the game may not think so but I dont care because God supercedes some stupid videogame.

But there is roleplaying (I dont mean like super nerdy I mean setting a few rules for play like I am lawful good priest/wizard guy so I cant do evil and try not to break law), exploration and discovery, and playing as if i was myself and it was real life. All are fine because its a game but I would never for instance

-roleplay a female, I rarely play females if ever

-do the romances in games (they go off by accident a lot... I had to reload a game because in ME1 the asari consort had sex with me for stopping the general from lying about her, even if she was a harlot I would still help her but I didnt want sex from her, I was just being chivalrous.) Apparently being nice to people or talking them means you want to have sex, those depraved liberals.....

(just too gross I hate they put that crap in game now)

All the other sins Im ok with except things like flirting or killing kids or helping demons or anything I deem extreme.

Things like lying, murder, theft, magic (its from God when I use it), alchemny etc I think are fine for a roleplay or exploring a game or the story.

Its basically like movie rules, there are bad and offensive things in movies and I filter accordingly, tasteful nudity doenst bother me (like a boob in Solaris) but sex scenes where they show nothing but are really... offensive, do bother me. And anything gay I skip (Bioware puts a lot of homosexual stuff in games, I boycott them for it and recommend you do too).

Yeah it does. It's hard for me to separate my faith and convictions from gaming. I will usually choose the "light side" options in games because I want to see how things turn out as they would if the game were actually my life. However, I will, with some games, go back and choose the "dark side" path just to see where that goes. But yeah, I like to make choices based on how I would truly react.

I don't have problems with roleplaying as a different gender, but I do have problems with homosexual relationships.

When I play sims 3, my sims are never homosexual, and if they have that leaning (yes, it's possible) I have a mod where I can tune their gender attraction appropriately. However, I rarely ever play sims without making a spouse set for them anyway.

Other games, like MMOs, I try to choose the light side over the dark (although this is not very clear when it comes to Horde vs. Alliance in WoW.) I will play different character types but will not touch warlock or shaman. I do tend to play paladins or hunters. I also hate PvP, dueling, or any quest that puts me into PvP mode. This is because I respect all players regardless of faction or class. At times I have attacked a member of the Horde but only because they attacked me first during a PvP quest objective. Also if they are attacking an Alliance town or city I will defend. At any rate I am done with WoW (can't afford to resub, and I have my 90 already anyway.)

I am currently playing Lord of the Rings Online (it's free to play!) and they have an option to play as one of Middle Earth's monsters once you get a character to level 10. However, they are definitely the dark side (allied with Sauron) so I will NOT be playing that way. I believe they call it PvMP (Player vs. Monster Player)

I understand this. When I started Warhammer Online my first character was in Destruction, but I didn't stay with it long before switching over to Order. Destruction just seemed to, well, bent on nothing but destruction and at least playing Order I felt I was fighting for the common good.

As silly as that may sound in a game.

yea but more so cultural beliefs as well, Like I Will never play any grand theft auto games, I feel they are a plight on the game industry. I know they have some great gameplay but there should be a point we dont cross and I think making it kool to kill women and cops for fun, isnt kool or fun at all

I have always considered the ethics of behavior in a virtual world to be an interesting topic for discussion.

On the outside, people see a gamer hire a hooker, run her over, and steal her money.

The gamer, however, sees a health power-up!

GTA is good for its sandbox gameplay, and that's what most people actually play it for. Most people don't care for the story, they just want to play in their sandbox.

There are other sandbox games out there with less criminal storylines. Jak 2 had some good sandbox gameplay inside the city.

Just Cause 2 is still a pretty violent sandbox game, but it's got some better mechanics and the character is more military and less mob.

I always choose the good side and non-jerk conversation options in games

Most morality systems in games look to me like the choice between being polite or being a jerk, not so much a choice between being good and evil...unless we're talking baby killing evil like in Bioshock.
