I just read this bit in C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity and thought it pertinent.

"There is no need to be worried by facetious people who try to make the Christian hope of 'Heaven' ridiculous by saying they do not want 'to spend eternity playing harps'. The answer to such people is that if they cannot understand books written for grownups, they should not talk about them. All the scriptural imagery (harps crowns, gold, etc.) is, of course, a merely symbolical attempt to express the inexpressible. Musical instruments are mentioned because for many people (not all) music is the thing known in the present life which most strongly suggests ecstasy and infinity. Crowns are mentioned to suggest the fact that those who are united with God in eternity share His splendour and power and joy. Gold is mentioned to suggest the timelessness of Heaven (gold does not rust) and the preciousness of it. People who take these symbols literally might as well think that when Christ told us to be like doves, He meant that we were to lay eggs."

ha, the bible is for grow ups is a load of crap, the bible is for every age group even small children, paul makes that clear when he says that to I forget his name but he said that he knew the scripture since he was a kid that is able to make him wise unto salvation, and there is many other places as well, that says the bible is for all ages, so your listening to the wrong person there I hope you realize

then most if not all children can read the bible, and not all the bible is symbolic, if you go by that standered then Jesus was just symbolic he never really did the things he said he did, but hey good thing I know better than that I know that the bible should be taken literally, unless it says other wise in context,

As a child educator I can assure you that most children are "grownup" enough to recognize symbolism and understand its general purpose.

I agree - certainly the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis demonstrates this point.

I also want to take a moment and thank MacFall for using sentences and inserting periods. Run-on sentences are very annoying.

Yep!

I literally believe Jesus did everything the bible says he did. I literally believe the prophets saw angels, and literally wrestled with them. Literally people were walking in flames and not having even a single hair singed. Literally Samson tore through the many soldiers with a donkeys jaw bone. Dreams are interpreted symbolic in some parts. Prophecies can be interpreted symbolic in some parts. But its literal in many other parts. Its not all literal or all symbolic. I believe if someone reads the bible with only one view like that will come up with a severely twisted view.

As the atheist in this thread, I'm definitely one of the people who will be sent to hell.
Hopefully I'll find some corner of hell I can hide, like behind some giant rock. While I'll still experience some pain, at least I can hide from the fire and the devils sticking their pitch forks in peoples backs.

Ha ha, I found a glitch in the system.

Trust me when I say you shouldnt joke about hell.
It is a place of suffering no person on this earth can comprehend. There will be nowhere to hide. Hell is no laughing matter

you have a wrong idea of hell, first of all the devils will be suffering in hell as well, because they will be also tortured with heat, and you don't have to go to hell, hell wasa not made for humans but for the devil and his angels, you wont last in the lake of fire though, which is where hell is going to be cast into, it is a solid hot lake like fire, with complete darkness

A quote I like from Paradise Lost
“Horror and doubt distract
His troubled thoughts and from the bottom stir
The Hell within him, for within him Hell
He brings and round about him, nor from Hell
One step no more than from himself can fly
By change of place.”
