I suppose all will remember Bruce Jenner, who won five gold medals at the Montreal Olympics. Well, he had just finished the race that gave him his 5th gold medal, when a distance runner from Haiti entered the arena...we was a few hours behind everyone else due to falls and stumbles along the way. Jenner waited, walked toward him, and shook his hand. He reportedly said, "You finished the course, and that is what counts." I thought it was somewhat magnanimous of Jenner to do that, and I never forgot it..nevermind his5 gold medals....he reached out to his fellow athlete.

Cheers,

Jim

I do remember that. I always loved Bruce Jenner. Wven more so after he shared on a talk show that he had the same hand eye coordination problems (the same as I have) due to a child hood eye problem, and that he could never play baseball and tennis and those kinds of sports. That was why he went into track. It encouraged me as I was such a klutz and sports as a kid always picked last, very small etc. I guess he grew up with a lot of compassion for people who try their hardest at things even though they don't always come out on top. When I started this thread last year I never thought it would go on to the second 1000..but it has thanks to all of those who have posted their cherished and sometimes very humorous memories.

Thanks for "Remembering When." and hope we keep going for another 1000.

remember these??? not in pink either !!!
The girls across the street where I lived had them. They were dark blue in color!

Do any of you remember this toy?
Could any of you do it?

From the early 80's. I bought one. I couldn't figure it out so I bought the solution book and I still couldn't do it!

Remember the balsa wood airplanes. They were ten cents but for a quarter they made one with a wind up elastic propeller. I remember collecting pop bottles from the roadside ditches so that I could cash them in for two cents each to buy these planes.

I took a class in what they called aeronautics (I think that was it) when I was in the 7th grade eons ago. Anyway, there were only two of us girls in there and the rest and the teacher all male.

We built a model airplane out of thin sticks and thin paper and then sprayed it with some kind of coating. Mine was a bright orange and looked lovely, but I could never get the hang of winding the propellor with a rubber band so it just hung in my room and never got to fly. ;)

Did anyone else build these? Once in a while I will see a fine looking one in an airport cafe.
