  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully." Rom. 12:6-8

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kids of tongues, and to still another the interpretations of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each other, just as He determines." 1 Cor. 12:7-11

Would playing 11 different instruments be considered a "gift"?
uuhh, yaha! Those would be the talents that are not to be buried, they should bring increase to God.

The Parable of the Talents

Matt 25:14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.

If playing 11 different instruments is just a hobby, then I'd say that it is just a talent.

But, if it is the area that God is using to use you, then I'd say that it is the a gift that God has given you to use for His glory.

He has measured out to me the gift of teaching adult classes, discernment, faith and being a good listener.

I am glad you posted this because there is a point I'd like to make, with humility. We all need to remember that it is Yeshua who apportions to each a measure of grace as He sees fit, to fulfill His plan... Since we each received from Him what we have, always be humble in remembering we did not choose our gifts for ourselves, He did.

Also, one gift is not above another. I have sadly seen some compare gifts as if one were greater than another. One may say, "Well, why are you not entertaining guests or helping in the church as much as I am?" Well, that person may have been given the gift of teaching a class and raising a family, which is a ministry unto the Lord! We each have a calling from the Lord. Different ministries and callings, same Yeshua! ;)

Thanks for starting this thread.

I think my gifts are the ability to cast out demons
and to sense peoples feelings, and to help them when they're unhappy

It scares me a little bit about the whole demon thing, but,
It works, and I JUST KNOW God is so close at those moments,
I'm not afraid anymore

Amen. I have had some experience fighting with demons, and it definitely takes a close relationship with the Lord to go through that unscathed.

I think that being able to sense feelings and to help people would fall under the gift of mercy that Romans talks about.

I agree with you that we all have an equal calling, and that all the gifts have equal value.

But Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12 to "eagerly desire the greater gifts."

"And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having the gifts of healing [notice the distinction here of different gifts of healing], those able to help others, those with the gift of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues [referring to interpreters here].

"Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts." 1 Cor. 12: 28-31

The gifts all are equal in value, and we are equally blessed to have them appointed to us.

But there are some gifts that are more powerful and useful than others.
