We had another thread in which we discussed going to church. And I realized I started kneeling when praying in private before I was Catholic, and noticed that Catholics kneel together in worship, which I thought was pleasant. So I was wondering about this, there are many bible verses that address this topic. I'll post a couple:

Psalm 95:6

O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker

Romans 14:11

For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

I got the passages from here: 32 Bible verses about Kneeling

Yes, i kneel in prayer, and sometimes i "pace", and sometimes i'm praying as i walk (prayer walks, etc.), and as i do ev'ry day things, etc. and sometimes i lie prostrate in prayer.

Prayer is "conversation" with God. It's a "heart-thing" with God, really believing that He IS present with us, and thus, the meaning and intent of the verse to "pray without ceasing".

Although I've prayed for my family and friends for some time and reluctantly my enemies, I'm still new to praying for people I don't know, but I'm finding that it works, so now I'm more open to it.

I do, sometimes! It's a good thing to to, imo. Scripture has many, many references to kneeling, bowing, and prostrating in worship. All over.

Yes I started wondering about kneeling this morning so when I looked in the scriptures I was surprised to see how many references there were. I guess when I read the bible I just blanked out those passages for some reason.

I hear you. It would be good for more Christians to do this, imho.

Yes we have had a lot of questions about how to pray from thread posters. And I have not yet suggested to kneel. My imperfection perhaps.

I can't kneel every time I pray.
Sometimes I'm driving a car.

Yes I especially pray when driving. I worry about accidents whether my fault or someone else.

God is GOOD, Devin. He leads us ALL through His precious Holy Spirit into ALL our communications with Him, and at His unction and prompting, we follow. He is a GOOD Teacher, just as it is written. He is also delightful, and He will prompt us, at times, to even "chuckle" along with Him at those things we are learning.

He is faithful. He's GOT it. TRUST Him. And celebrate the Wunnerful Teacher that He is.

God bless you Devin, for sharing, and for this delightful thread.

There is a lot of emphasis on raising hands. Virtually none on kneeling or bowing. Or prostrating. I've tried mentioning that, and it didn't go well.

Didn't go well? Sorry to hear that. It's a good teaching in my opinion and well supported by scripture as I'm finding.

I'm somewhat new to prostrating. But there have been communication with God where I felt a need to prostrate.

Hi Phil. No we can't always kneel. The "praying without ceasing" is a "heart-attitude" of acknowledging God's "presence" and "speaking" to Him aloud or even silently, in our "hearts". Like for instance what Devin said about praying when he's driving. We continue our activities with our eyes wide open, and our "heart" "speaks" to God, and/or our "thoughts".

God bless you.

I hear you. I should do this more, often, too.

Some Christians get very, very defensive when anyone questions the tradition of raising hands in some Charismatic or contemporary Christian settings. They argue that this is Scriptural, commanded, and I've attended worship services where the pastor will demand that at certain moments, everyone raise their hands. Not as part of a liturgy, but as something that seems tied to his whims, and optimistically, what the Spirit has told him to say.

When you point out that kneeling, bowing, and prostrating have more Scriptural support than lifting or raising hands in worship, the backlash can be pretty intense.

Interesting, I've never raised my hands in worship. Is that something supported in scripture?

I pray throughout the day, but I kneel for my morning and evening prayers. And, even though I'm protestant, I cross myself, too. It's odd, now that I think about. I've never shared this with anyone before.

They quote 1 Timothy 2:8, where "lifting up holy hands" is mentioned.

Which is ok, but that doesn't and shouldn't negate other body postures used in worship.

This is what they seem to want it to look like;

I'm more ok with this;

Personally.

I'm curious as I'm new to the Catholic church. What is the meaning of crossing self?
