Do you ever have intrusive thoughts? Sadly I do and they are of such a nature that they cannot be repeated here As the article says, the thoughts aren't voluntary and they seem to have become more common as I have begun becoming paranoid of having those thoughts.

General,

In 2 Corinthians, Paul tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (physical) but mighty through God to the PULLING down of STRONGHOLDS.

A stronghold in this sense speaks of thoughts that are contrary to God’s Word. He further goes on to say that we must cast down imagination and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every THOUGHT to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
3. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4. (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

So God's Word COMMANDS us to bring our thoughts into captivity to the obedience of Christ. We have been given the charge to subdue and dominate it.

We are to police negative thoughts and not allow them to run rampant in our minds. We are to restrain these thoughts and exchange them with what God's word says about them, which is bringing them under the obedience of Christ.

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ...

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Isaiah 26:3
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

I get the feeling that you have already tried controlling these thoughts, but you have not had a lot of success so far. Although, scripture and faith often times helps, there are times when they don't. You should not feel guilty if they don't. Do you have a pediatrician or family doctor? It would be a good idea to start there, as you may actually have a treatable medical condition (much as the article you reference in Wikipedia talks about). You would not expect scripture or faith alone to cure you if you had Diabetes, would you? God also works through the many medical professionals available to you in your community.

cprstat is right. What you may have is something called OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). I suffered with it for 8 years. It was just plain terrible. What you may possibly need is something called exposure/response therapy. It worked for me and I no longer have intrusive thoughts about God. The Lord used that therapy to heal me.

Please talk to your doctor. And don't be afraid to tell what your thoughts are. I know they seem very terrible to you, but others have had them before you. I'm one of those people.

I struggle with these ALL THE TIME. Please contact a councilor or therapist who has experience with OCD and anxiety. You don't have to live like this, there is help out there if you are willing to find it.

I totally agree with seajoy. The Lord has given people the wisdom to understand and treat very complex mental health problems. Christ doesn't want any of us to suffer with thoughts that hurt us, and you deserve happiness :)

Please, seek help.

Like the others have said if it is a very major problem in your life it is worth getting counselling to help you.

Yes I sometimes do but it is a lot less common for me now. Just a couple of days ago I repeatedly got the thought "you used to read and watch such bad things, that means you are just like what you read/watched. " Totally irrational I know....

In the past I had a lot of very negative and critical thoughts and I found reading the Bible and listening to online sermons when those very accusing words came to me helped a lot. I now recognize that type of thought as not coming from me especially when they come from nowhere and/or I find it hard to get rid of them without much prayer.

To be totally honest with you, medication can be a major help with this.

So: what do I think causes this?
What are our choices?
a) the depraved nature
1the "inner you" (disgusted at your failures)
2 the inner you trying to fix things
3 the inner you influenced by the Enemy
b) the Enemy
We are not ignorant of his devices
c) physical brain chemicals (like serotonin, adrenaline, and other deficits or overloads)
d) The Lord
1 If all things work together for good to them that love God,to them that are called according to His purpose, then somehow this OCD is being allowed for your GOOD by your GOD!!!

How about all of the above?
The depraved nature is still present in the Christian and is wide open to "suggestion". The Enemy LOVES to suggest things, the more horrible the better.Your chemical makeup, designed and manufactured by Almighty God, is very easily affected by external sources. And a loving God loves YOU so much that He will allow MAJOR TRIALS to help you attain the Image of Christ.

Read (today) an article ,which you can "GOOGLE" up . It is Ray Comfort on "Anxiety".. Totally Christian based.

PS Correctly applied medication DOES NOT stone you, elevate your mood to some "ecstasy" or take away your problems. SSRI (Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitors) actually work by preventing YOUR BODY from using serotonin in an incorrect manner. It doesn't ADD "dope", but just regulates the stuff your body has already. I am NOT a physician, and can only recommend that you,TODAY, make an appointment with your MD and chat about this. And don't forget: the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperatly wicked.Who can know it? So don't expect your "heart" to feel warm and fuzzy about ANY treatment program.

I've had particularly horrible thoughts today-I briefly had imprecatory thoughts that God would strike down my mother. I can't help but think-was that a genuine wish of mine? :(

I would head over to the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder forum here on CF. It's under recovery forums. I think it is imperative that you see a doctor and get a diagnosis as soon as you can. There are therapies and treatments for things like this.....and they do work. I'm living proof.

Yes, medicine can be of help for anxiety. Before starting any medication, be aware of the potential side effects. I have taken many different anti-anxiety medications and have for years. Over the years, several doctors tried to switch me to their preferred medication, some of which had severe side effects. What works for me might not work for you. Be careful what you put into your body. I've found something that works, doesn't affect my cognitive abilities, and just takes the edge off stressful situations. General, do not tell anybody what you're taking or why. It could be used against you.
