  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you believe?

Do you believe that unborn child is a person.
That´s merely a semantics question.

I don´t know how to determine at which point something becomes a person or ceases to be a person.
I don´t the concept "person" is not sufficiently precisely defined for determining that.
I think that "person" is used in completely different meanings, depending on the context.
I think the purpose of this category is not to draw precise lines.

There seems to be a desire to conceptualize continuous processes as being a sequence of clearly distinguishable states.

I think that it is life at conception.

A person? That I don't know.

I find it hard to believe that 2-4 cells is "a person".

If we were able to clone a person, would the clone be a person the moment that the cells were extracted from my body?

What is difficult is to say that there is a day when the fetus goes from tissue to person. It's hard to define.

It's also hard to define if a soul is trapped in a body after the person is clearly brain dead, and kept alive only by artificial means.

A fertilised egg is a non-person. A baby that has just been born is a person. Anybody who claims there is some easily and objectively determined point in between the two where there is a sudden step-change from "nonperson" to "person" is deluded. Apart from anything else, it rests on the nontrivial task of determining what qualities make any born human being a "person" (regardless of their physical or mental wellbeing) whilst excluding other animals from personhood.
