I have witnessed generational curses is my own family, and they are very real. I believe that you can speak curses over your own self also. In my family, my grandmother developed Dementia, and had to be put in a board and care facility. My father, her son, said for years after this that he would probably get it also. Sure enough, last year he was put into a board and care facility with the same thing. His wife, my step-mom always told him, "you are getting just like your mother". This was before there was any evidence of the Dementia. She was pronouncing this curse on him also. This was what was happening...Proverbs 6:2 ~Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. James 3:6 ~ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
My step-mom is also in the board and care facility with Dementia also. I think she is being judged for pronouncing this curse over my dad, so she received it also. There was no evidence of Dementia in either her parents, brothers or sisters.
My sister and I have broken this generational curse with the blood of Jesus, and speaking this scripture over our lives....2nd Timothy 1:7 ~ For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a SOUND MIND. We definately need to watch our words. They can bring blessings or curses.

I believe in all that. That is why Christians ask God to bless their food and should always try to choose positive words to say.

Christians say grace before each meal because of curses that may be involved? I always thought grace was a prayer of thanksgiving and praise.

How do you think your step-mom invoked the curse in the first place;did she have to call on satan directly?

There was alot more to this story, but I know how people do not usually like to read long posts, so I will condense if possible. My stepmom professed to be a Christian, but had an evil heart. She and my dad had an affair while he was still married to my mom. She hated me and my sister after they got married, and we weren't welcome in their home. She let us know this by her attitude. She would plan family birthday parties for my dad with her side of the family, but we weren't invited. (NOTE: My dad and stepmoms first husband were best friends. My mom and stepmom were best friends for over 20 years. My stepsisters and me and my sister were practically raised together).
About the last 10-15 years of their marriage, my stepmom became a hypocondriac, and started taking to her bed alot. She had numerous tests, and they could never find anything wrong with her. We knew one thing that she had was mental illness, which me and my sister recognized as demon oppression. It was to selective to suit her needs. We really witnessed this one night while my sister and I were at their house. We were discussing the bible, and our stepmom jumped up and kicked the footstool clear across the room, and then got in our faces and started screaming like a maniac. Now, I do not expect people to believe this, but it is true. A watery looking vail came down between her and me and my sister as a barrier. My sister told our stepmom real calmly to sit down before she had a stroke, LOL. She did, and we left real quick. I asked my sister out in the car if she had seen this watery looking thing, and she said, YES!!!! We knew then that it was the protection of the Holy Spirit. We believe this verse is what happened: Isaiah 59:19 ~ So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. We saw this "standard".

Sorry, didn't mean to write a book here. Anyway, our stepmom was demon oppressed, and we believe demon possessed also. We think the demons fed off of her, and influenced her on what she was saying to our dad, and they got her also. We tried speaking the Word into both of their lives, and told them what they were doing, but they wouldn't hang onto it.

It is. This is what it is referring to in Timothy...1st. Timothy 4-5 ~ For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is SANCTIFIED by the word of God and prayer.

I do not believe that curses can come by eating without praying first. You may get a stomach ache afterwards if you don't pray, because that food isn't sanctified, made holy.

My father lost his one leg in a train accident when he was in his thirties. My eldest son got Osteomyelitis and nearly lost his leg. I saw a pattern and refused to sign for amputation my son nearly died. His heart stopped twice (heart failure).

At that time, I felt stupid to even think of it is a curse and I reason with myself in what do I have to loose if I break a curse and there is not one, nothing. However, if there is a curse and I don’t break it my son will lost his leg.

I break the curse and God healed my son completely after having trouble with that leg for almost 12 years.

 *sigh*** I used to believe in many of these - - - - until paid attention to teachers less and read my Bible more.

You do not "Bring on curses yourself". I used to believe in that - I used to be so fearful of that - I would watch every word I said and renounce anything I said that may cause a 'curse' - How sad that I lived that way.

Attention - sickness happens - we are in a fallen world. We can only bring on sickness ourselves by not taking care of ourselves. Tell you what..you smoke to much - you just may get lung cancer...common sense!!! AND If you do get it - it is not because I just said you may (although I bet a few poeple may be rebuking as they read this...

) .... it is because you are a smoker, and well...that is one of the effects of smoking.

We have Christ, however, and the eternal sickness is **GONE** - physical is part of this world. God can heal us...and He does...but we did not cause a sickness by saying "I will probably get that!"....

How much power do you think Satan has? Let me tell you......Not that much! Infact - He has very little that it seems so silly to me that CHRISTIANS are fearful that evil will take hold of our 'words' and 'make them happen'

In Christ,
HTD

This is for those who don't understand how some curses are (if you will) delivered;

Mark 11:12. And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:
13. And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
14. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
15. And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
16. And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
17. And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
18. And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
19. And when even was come, he went out of the city.
20. And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
21. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.

So yes, you can speak curses whether purposely or ignorantly, as Jesus showed us. This is what James was refering to when he was talking about the tongue.

Folks, there is no getting away from this, you saw what Jesus did, how can you explain away this example?

[c]By the way, blessings operate the same way, so start blessing!!!:)[/c]

Yes, I believe it. Not only genetics run down family lines.
Check out Derek Prince's Blessings and Curses,
Breaking Generational Curses by Marilyn Hickey
and A More Excellent Way by Henry Wright. All on AMazon.

There is, however, a handy way to stop generational curses. Repent before God about your participation in sin and your families.

The power of the spoken word is plain to see by any secular estimation as well. MANY psychologists and scientists have studied the phenomenon of speaking positively and what it does for the human brain. They can actually WATCH what happens in the brain now when information is presented to a human. They can see what happens when negative input is given and what happens when positive input is given.

Having a postive mental attitude is one of the most WIDELY accepted reasons for success in all areas of life and not just spiritual. Beyond that, LOOK quoted the perfect passage for this. Christ bestowed the power to bind things on Earth and in Heaven, with our words. Words are very VERY powerful, just look at the beginning of the Gospel of John to understand this, and especially in the original Greek where the word for "word" is "logos" Logos meant much more than just a language word in Greek and for good reason.

You can call it a curse if you like, I happen to believe that when we curse something (bind it) on Earth that we have also as Christians cursed it in the Spiritual Realm (bound it in Heaven). Generational curses are pretty basic too in my opinion, as my Father died of alcoholism it was VERY difficult for me to understand that I had to battle against the very common opinion that I was "at-risk". In fact, I have been "beating the odds" my whole life. I foolishly spent a whole semester as a sociology major where I listened to a Ph.D. tell me how statistically I shouldn't be there. The odds, statistics and all of that do not matter. "Facts" do not matter, what matters is your attitude and how you approach things, you have Freedom of Choice.

If you choose to accept that because someone with Influenza sneezed on you you will get sick as well, then you will. However, if you choose to believe in Faith that God has granted you divine health then that is your choice. Personally, I see NO reason to believe I'll get sick at all, even if the physical evidence is against me :)
