  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Do we glorify killers?

You're right. I'm sorry.

I'm guilty of it too. In Canada, December 6th is a day to remember the murder of fourteen women in Quebec (1989). They were engineering students and the were murdered by a guy who blamed "feminists" for his rejection from the school. I will always remember that his name was Marc Lepine. Every year I try to remember one of the women's names but I find that I have usually forgotten them by January... that's the power of the media (and the laziness of my mind).

Peace.

Why is there a market for these types of materials? Why do we need to fill our minds with these sorts of things?

Green River Killer Interviews Now on DVD

The grim details of the Green River killings were offered for sale Monday in the form of 109 DVDs containing video and text interviews with Gary Ridgway, the man with the most convictions of any serial murderer in U.S. history.

Ridgway, sentenced in December to 48 life sentences without chance of parole, told authorities in the interviews what he could remember about his female victims in a plea deal that spared him execution.

The disks include more than 400 hours of video and nearly 8,500 pages of transcripts, said Derek Dohn, CEO of Chameleon Data, which compiled the DVDs. They comprise 106 days of interviews that took place between June 13 and Dec. 16, 2003, and the retail price for the set is $2,220.

I should hope that any money which is made off of this is going to help the families of the victims.

I dont agree. As has been said before, its morbid curiosity. We want to understand what caused people to do this and why. We crave answers about the going ons deep within our minds and the minds of others. Something may have been horrible and cruel, but why does that mean we cant make a movie about it to represent what happend and try to understand it? WW2 was horrible, does that mean we cant make movies about it? The holocaust was horrible, does that mean we cant make movies about it? The quest for knowledge and understanding is never ending. Just because something was bad, doesnt mean we should ignore it.

Same reason people start threads drawing attention to it?

I'm pleased I'm not the only one who finds the irony in sweetkitty's OP, when so many of her topics are about murder/monsters/serial killers/child killers/etc. Creepy, to say the least.

But as to this DVD collection; at $2,200 a piece, I'd imagine that the average Joe will not be buying it, but that tertiary institutions and people who are psychology/psychiatry professionals and criminologists will.

I have something of a problem with recent policies that prevent prisoners from making money while in prison: it kept Charles Manson from releasing his excercise tape. Yeah, you heard that right: Manson was going to release an excercise tape. I guess it'd be kind of problematic knowing that I would've put my money into the Manson estate, but let's get some perspective on this - I could've been doing stretches and aerobics along with Charles Manson every morning.

I know, I know, I'm part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Yeah, I asked earlier but didn't get a response, but that may be due to my non existence...but...seriously....why is it ok for her to be fascinated by it and reading about it since she was 12, but not others?? Maybe someone else can ask since she doesn't respond to me.

So many of my topics? I'm sorry I don't know what you mean. I post about a lot of different things on these forums...few of them have anything to do with the subjects you listed. Anyway the topic...again...is not about me but about whether the public glorifies killers...or rather makes celebraties out of them. I'd have to say, yes. Maybe we even help create them?

I have to disagree with you kitty - big surprise I know. But I have noticed that what Lunachick said is true - IMO. However, to me, it is fascinating to read about them and b/c of my morbid curiosity, I do like to see what makes them tick. I do agree on the fact that in certain situations though that yes, we do help create these monsters. Again, just my 2 cents for what it's worth..........

of course, people have always been interested in the morbid and violent, from middle ages art that depicted, in incredibly grisly fashion, the tortures of hell, to the 18th and 19th century public executions, to now. I'd guess it just seems worse now due to the rapidity of our media of communication.

Let's not forget the lovely days of the Coliseum. They would smear the men women and kids in blood to be sure they were attacked with vigor. I think it is silly to say things are horribl now. They are immensely better than other ages. Up until this last century we still had public executions. Things are slowly getting better.

I'd answer but I don't care to get banned.

Hey I'd watch Charles Manson's exercise video. I've seen a couple of his parole hearings, he's crazier than a fish in a car wash. But I'd draw the line at John Wayne Gacy's clown paintings, because clowns are evil.
