Do not greet those who don't adhere to Jesus' teachings?

Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. - 2 John 1:8-10

Do you know people who have slipped from the sound teachings of Jesus into 'other' beliefs? Do you avoid them?
Sounds pretty hard doesn't it? - Yet the Word is clear.
Is the scripture regarding just believers? (I personally think so)
How do you apply this scripture to your life and to other believers?

The verse does not mean that we cannot greet other people who are heretics or non-believers, it means we cannot simply accept them as if they are a true believer because this would justify their false beliefs. The proof of this is the fact that we are called to spread the gospel. If we couldn't greet non-believers or talk to them then Christianity would have died with the apostles. The way I apply this is I don't call somebody who rejects the doctrines in the Nicene Creed a Christian. They may believe in Jesus but if they reject this creed then they are not Christians. Even Muslims believe in Jesus and would possibly accept 50% of the doctrines within the Nicene Creed but nobody would call them Christians. I think Non-Catholics are wrong but if they accept the creed then I consider them Christians.

I don't believe the scripture is about non believers at all, because the Word tells us to not forsake spending time with unbelievers. I don't think it's talking about not inviting non Christians over for dinner. Like you said, we're called to spread the gospel.

I think it's about those who started as believers but then got sidetracked from the gospel of love. The scripture is directed towards Christians. "Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God"

I take it a fair deal literal - Don't even greet these Christians who have fallen away and chased their false beliefs. I wonder if this applies to those "Christians" who viciously malign the true bride of Christ (see my signature for further insight on that). Seems to me it would considering the fact that this synagogue of satan are not accepted by the Lord.

Well I kind of see it as similar to the scripture in 1 Cor 5 where we are told to have nothing to do with those in the body who get into sexual sin.

I do not know about your video, but it is true, at least the scriptual part. It is intended for the few of God to protect against the wicked. The Spirit of God is the conscience of every believer in God and protects against the evil.

ok, but I don't believe this scripture is to be taken generally... Who, in your opinion, do you think the scripture is written to and what people is God telling us to not even greet?

Yesterday Abba led me to some very interesting information which I think ties into this nicely.

As I was pondering these scriptures and wondering about what causes certain Christians to malign and attack God's true people, the Lord said the word "Thessalonians". So naturally I grabbed my bible and read through the 2 books of Thessalonians. Nothing particular stood out to me until I got to this scripture:

“That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God” – 2 Thess 2-4

In the margin I had written these words which describes perfectly, not only those whom have diverted off the true course of Christianity, but also describes those who malign God’s true body. It's the spirit of antichrist at work in them. Here is what the note said:
“This scripture (2 Thess 2-4) is describing a type of mindset & carnality (spirit of antichrist) which will sit/reign within some Christians in the end times.. This spirit causes them to play God, worship & exalt their own carnal intellect, and sit in judgement of others”

Wow did that ever hit home. I do believe that the Lord is saying to not even greet these ones who have fallen into such deception and to allow God to deal with them. The true body cannot argue with the spirit of antichrist - Only the Lord can expose their erroneous judgements, convict them, and set them free from their erroneous judgements of the true bride of Christ. Those who refuse to be corrected will hang their heads in shame at the appointed time.
This goes hand in hand with the Lord prompting me to not bother trying to convince them otherwise.

Amazing how He unfolds things for us and leads us to the truth. Praise God \o/

My thought is to ask you if you read 1 Corinthians 5:9-13?
9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortionernot even to eat with such a person.

12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore put away from yourselves the evil person.

As to 2nd John 1:8-13 and your initial question in the original post, I'd ask if John the Evangelists teachings reflect Christ and his behavior?

Did you see this in 1 Thess 2 ? Much of that chapter gives insight re those within the church who attack the people of God. Seems there's lots of it going on today.

For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, 15 who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all men, 16 hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost

God deals with them in time

Yes, I did mention 1 Cor 5 in the thread somewhere along the line.

I also found this scripture in 2 Thess 3:14
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame.

It seems there are many times we are instructed to not associate with those who are believers and who follow the wrong path. I've been looking a little deeper into these sorts of passages. There sure seem to be a lot, and they challenge the mindset we tend to have which dictates that 'unconditional love' means always sticking around.. but that's not what the bible says = We can love people from a distance while we obey God, amen?

she figured that every
christian screaming "you can't judge me !! " , Or " your not my judge " is really saying just like the world he isn't part of the body even when he call themselves Christian" because God tells us to judge each other .
