Do Not Deceive Yourselves

“3King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray to the LORD our God for us.” (Jer 37:3)

King Zedikiah did not like Jeremiah’s messages and did not want to obey what the Lord commanded, but he wanted the blessing of Jeremiah’s prayers. They wanted a religion that made them feel good, but not one that required anything of them.

“6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt. 8Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.’
9“This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian£ army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down.”

God was letting Zedikiah know that they would not escape God’s judgment without repenting, no matter what they do. In Ch. 36, Zedikiah tried to burn. Ignoring the Word from the Lord, burning the scroll, nor torturing His messengers would stop this punishment from coming.

How many people today are ignoring every message of repentance and warnings of judgment and choosing to accept a lie that makes them feel good, instead? They criticize, persecute, ignore, ridicule, or mock those who give these messages out of obedience to God and choose to continue to indulge in the very things that Christ died to set them free from. Just as Zedikiah and all of Judah did not escape the judgment that the Lord promised through Jeremiah, neither will anyone today escape the consequences of refusing to repent of their sins. Ignoring it or brushing it off will get them nowhere but under the wrath of God. Do not try to run away! Submit to Him, confess your sins, repent, and give Him your whole heart! The only way is through the cross of Jesus Christ!

“9Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them. 10We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat.
11The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. 12And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. 13Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. 14For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Heb 13:9-16)
