Hi, everyone! I have been in Asia for several years now and the church I belong to recently hosted a major sports event that included "mask " (that is the literal translation). Maybe someone else can give me a better word for this. The mask performance appear in this media. http://healingallnations.shinchonji.kr/lang/en/archives/236)

Because I have been in Asia for so long, I am losing memory of Christianity in the States. Do most churches there have yearly sports events? I am quite curious. My church has yearly sports events (as well as more frequently in certain sports) as well as a major event every four years.

My church has sport tournaments (basketball, badminton, ping-pong) against other churches (with the same ethnicity) once a year in Los Angeles.

We do these to get all the youth involved and get to know other youths.
And we do "share podiums" .. where the youth leaders from each church bring/share the sermon to the other youth group meeting.

fun stuffs.

Kasih why is it just the same ethnicity if i may ask?

I've never heard of this...my church doesn't have any sports teams

Lets say (for teh sake of my teh interweb privacy :D)..

I'm a Korean and it happens that our church and many other Koreans churches in the area have strong relationship with us.

Also, knowing that many of our older member aren't fluent in English, (very traditional), there's a possibility they have fear of language barrier.

There's also an aspect that since there's not many Koreans we know around, it gives us the pleasure to meet new Korean friends.

But aside from playing in major tournaments with the Koreans, we do support our youth people sports in their school or University or playing with non-religious friends.

What I'm trying to say is, we love sports and we have a huge youth group that love to socialize, .. in a way .. we can meet non-christian friends at the basketball court and share the gospel.

Kasih, I agree with you wholeheartedly! Sports is a great avenue to evangelize others. Have you had the blessed opportunity to lead someone to Christ? I have never attended a Korean church in the States (I am sorry to assume that you are from the States?). I wonder how, if at all, they differ from the average Korean churches in Korea?

I would say most churches in the US don't have sports events.
I don't think the New Testament church did either,
at least there's no Biblical evidence of it.
