  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've been wondering about that...

Jesus did them in the Bible didn't he? Do I believe that Miracles happen? Yes!

As to how they happen that is the mystery isn't it?;)

I believe in miracle and I believe that other stuff can happen. It's all a gift from God. . .and those and other gifts are complete mysteries. There's nothing that says those things are dead today.

Well, the second part can be quite necessary, too. I don't think God would actually want to be all publicized like a lot of those people claim. I think it would happen for those who don't try to go public/make public statements with them. . .sure, some is okay. . .just not like most of them. aka. . .one of the members of 4him was miraculously healed. . .cool thing to aid them in their ministry - but it happened AFTER the group was formed. . .

Do I believe in miracles? You betcha!

Its a miracle everytime someone is brought to faith.

Everytime a little baby is born.

When seed planted in the ground brings crops, trees or whatever the seed is.

Miracles I've witnessed in healing:

My Mother in law who is now gone, lived 20 some years after they had to remove an anurism from her brain the size of a grapefruit.

My Mother was mysteriously healed from lupas.

I was healed from a nueropathy when things looked like the end was near.

I was also saved from a frozen lake and brought "back" to life when the docs said don't expect him to live.

Do I believe in faith healing? NO!

I believe in God's willingness and ability to heal and perform any miracle through prayer. I have more thoughts on faith healing but I will respectfully keep them to myself!

Regarding miracles, divine intervention has, does, and will occur. We are not dogmatic about anything that has occurred since Biblical times, however. For example, we do not have dogmatic beliefs comparable to Catholic beliefs about visions of Mary at Fatima, etc.

We believe that prayer can be very powerful regarding healing, but do not believe that a minister can smack someone on the forehead and cure them.

Here is the Missouri Synod Lutheran view of exorcism and casting out of demons (my guess is this statement is consistent with most, if not all, other Lutheran denominations on the subject):

Q. Does the LCMS hold an official position as to the existence of demonic possession? Does the LCMS retain the Rite of Exorcism as practiced in the Roman and Eastern Orthodox churches? Does the LCMS have special clergy assigned to this task?

A. The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod certainly believes in the existence of Satan and of demonic beings, and individual LCMS pastors have participated from time to time in rites of exorcism. The LCMS has no "official position" on "demonic possession," however, nor does it subscribe officially to any formal rite of exorcism or have "special clergy assigned to this task."

We believe that Miracles (although mysteries) can be understood by what they produce.

What is the purpose of Miracles is not to entertain our eyes, our ears, and other bodily senses.

The purpose of Miracles is to establish strength within our souls and love and acknowledgement of God Almighty.

Remember, that Herod and even the Pharisees demanded a Miracle from our Lord Jesus, but none was given.

Herod wanted to be entertained and nothing more.

The Pharisees on the other hand knew that if Jesus delivered a miracle of such purposes to feed the senses, they would have proved him a fake. But Jesus knew this was a trick on the part of the Pharisees. The True Messiah does not deliver miracles for such carnal amusements of the senses.

Healing, Exorcisms, Raising the dead back to life etc. These miracles for example demonstrated the Lords promise to us and not to delight our curiosities or to feed our carnal senses.

Do we Lutherans believe in Miracles? Absolutely.

A miracle can be an answered prayer for repentance, when we ask for strength to overcome ever committing the same sin. Also, a miracle can be something that reminds us of the Lords promise.

I can't speak for other Lutherans on this subject, but I believe in healings...miricles and the like...

as for casting out demons I absolutely believe in spiritual warfare...my biological mother was a witch...when I say that I'm not talking about the wiccans running around today...I'm talking about actual "black" Satanic witchcraft...so I've seen a few things when I was growing up that I REALLY don't like to talk about...to say that I am a firm believer in the "powers and principalities of the air" is something of an understatement...

Yes, I believe in all those things.

The problem is that it is one thing to believe that God still performs miraculous things as contrasted with the belief that the gifts of such things as healing are still active.

In that I am a pretty hard cessationist. God can and does miraculously heal some people, however, I am not aware of anyone who has the gift of healing.

Y'all do know that "The Exorcist" was based on a true story involving a 14 year old Lutheran boy from Maryland in 1947? The first series of exorcisms on him were performed at the Chaple of the Holy Apostles in the base of Luther Tower on the St. Louis seminary campus.

Is not a "healing" performed everytime a pastor baptizes someone?

Interesting how they have made the movies with Catholic Priests and not with Lutheran ministers.

I don't remember reading that the boy was Lutheran, but the actual exorcism was performed by a group of Catholic priests. One of the last in the group of priests died recently and our local paper ran a bunch of stories about him and the exorcism, also re-running the original stories when it happened. If you Google the subject, you might get the paper articles. You could go to www.stltoday.com and do a search, but it will probably be archived and they charge for archived stories. Sometimes, though, they show up in Google searches. If you can find them, they were facinating.

About the OP, I believe in miracles, and I believe that God can heal. I do believe He does these things in response to our prayers. By saying this, I do not believe that God refuses to heal because someone didn't pray enough, or enough people didn't pray, or the prayers weren't good enough. I have to make this disclaimer because there are people, even Lutherans, who believe that healing only occurrs through prayer, and if you don't pray enough or good enough, the healing won't happen. An LCMS Lutheran pastor near me actually preached this - eventually everyone in the congregation ran and the church was foreclosed on.

The final series of exocisms were done by Jesuit priests from St. Louis University at the old Alexian Brothers Hospital. But the first exocisms were done on the Concordia Seminary campus. The first pastor to see the boy was his own Lutheran pastor in Maryland.
The boy's mother and grandmotrher were from St. Louis so they went there in an attempt to get away from whatever was troubling the boy, but it followed.

I agree with you. I believe in miracles and healings but there are many who use these to make a profit and lead the sheep astray.
