  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As I have mentioned before, I currently pursuing a BA majoring in English in the hpes of being able to get into my univseristies post degree Faculty of Education program.

I was going to take a History minor, but I have found out that a minor is of no importance to me for entry into the program. I would like to do away with it, given how I had recently ended my registation in two history courses that I had planned to take next year. But what stops me from dropping it is the feeling thatI may need it later if I should ever wind up doing something other than teaching.

Any advice on what I should do?

Such helpful posts lol :) Well, if you don't take a minor, does that mean you'd have to take less credits overall, or just that you'd have more electives? If its the same # of credits, why not do a minor? If it'd mean more credits and/or longer time at school, best thing to do is talk to your profs ... AFAIK having a minor isn't likely to be a dealbreaker or anything, but I don't really know for sure.

To take the minor, I would have to drop at least one copurse that I am really interested in taking, and also mean I would have to take two addional history courses next summer. To have the minor without dropping anything would require an additional semester pursuing my degree.

But at the same time, I am concerned about possibly needing the minor if I go into a career other than teaching.

You should take the courses that your interested in. Minors are for fun, nobody is going to hire you because you have a minor in something. So I'd say take courses that relate to what you want to do in your career, and if it works out that they make up a minor, great. Otherwise, don't worry.

And as fed said, get a minor in physics or math and become a real man :)

I was told by my academic adviser that a minor is only a look nice, like community service was in high school. You should instead go for a double major (though you may be too far in to pull that). I don't see how a minor can really help you except as a look good. Having the knowledge is what counts (and showing the job interviewers that you do have the knowledge).

For what it's worth, I wouldn't have my minor (Chemistry) if I didn't only have to take a couple extra classes to get it. Most of the classes for a Chem minor are covered in the Biology major.

I think you'll be fine without. Although if something like Communication is offered as a minor, something that heavily overlaps with your English degree, I'd for sure go for it. Or if you have some spare class space and need to fill it ;)
