Sometimes I pray the "canonical hour prayers". It's mostly reading/praying from the psalms. I'm wondering how much difference it does for the world. Could it be the world would have been in much worse shape if we didn't have the constant canonical praying in the monasteries?

There are many accounts of demons being caught up in spiritual warfare at the monasteries which prevents them from messing with the lives of other people in the world. Unlike God they can't be in more than one place at the same time and they are limited in number.
