"Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him." - 1 Col. 3:17

"giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father;" - Eph 5:20

Does this mean that a prayer formula must be spoken everytime we give thanks? I think this could also could relate to the act of baptizing. I think it would be correct to say that actions done in the name of Jesus does not require anything outside of the action which is being performed. Example - If I drink a glass of cold water in the name of another disciple(example taken from Matthew 10:42), it's obvious that a person can not drink and speak a formula simultaneously.

I would think that that actions done in the name of Jesus would be those which were done under the influence of Christ in whom there is all authority("All authority has been given to me" - Matthew 28:18).

The main question here is: Is any specific formula required for the act of baptizing according to Matt 28:19; secondly, please share your thoughts on the meaning of "in the name of".

Thanks. I hope this makes interesting discussion.

you know i've always been curious about this too. i don't really have an answer about the baptism part of your question but as far as the prayer part....i've always wondered....you're told to pray "in Jesus name, amen" so if you don't use those specific words, what? does God not hear the prayer? i personally don't think so. i mean, what if someone has never been taught that this is how you should pray? i personally don't think God cares how we word things to Him as long as we keep in communication with Him. this is of course just my opinion.:)
