We would have to define people, first. If what is essential to personhood is the ability to reason, which has been a common position, then an alien who can reason is a person. If it's a featherless bi-ped, then both an alien and a plucked chicken could qualify. May God bless Diogenes!!!

I was always confused by how such (in movies) would start eating Earth people without seeing if we were safe for them to eat, first...!

That turned out to be a bad idea for the "basic" aliens in Signs (2002).

Without knowing where they come from and what they eat I wouldn't risk it.
Talk to them first by inviting them to dinner.
Knowing how to rear them will lead to nice green piece of wagyu that is out of this world.
