Divine Vengeance -- what is your view?

God is a vengeful God. He will seek vengence against those who sin against those who have sought Him. He is also a merciful God... He will forgive those who sin against their neighbors if they turn, repent and seek Him.

I'm surprised to see such widely varying opinions expressed on this thread concerning God's punishment. I wonder how come? Does the Bible not clear this question up? It seems like there would be some more settled-on answers than there appear to be. The way I see it, the Church's ecumenical councils have probably answered this question, and, being a traditionalist, I'm inclined to believe what they say, if they have said something. **Confused.**
