• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Was diagnosed today and have been having very severe pains on the left side of abdomen. Pray for me please. Its always scary when the colon hurts and the pain is sometimes unbareable. I slept in the recliner last night and I will be back in it tonight.
If anyone have any good home remedies, I am open.

I have IBS, but my symptoms are less severe. I rarely have pain unless I eat something I shouldn't, such as candy or Chinese. Usually I just get constipated or have diarrhea off and on. The thing that helps me most is avoiding raw fruits and vegetables, and making note of what I eat that sets me off. For example, I stopped eating BBQed red meat because my friend would BBQ before every New Orleans Saints game and I'd have "the runs" within 2 days. Eventually I caught on and, regrettably, had to turn his offers down (he's a whiz on the grill).

I also suffer from IBS. I just got over a bout of it the past few days. And, yes, the pain can get nearly intolerable!! I feel better this morning, and I pray that it has eased for the foreseeable future. As for home remedies. They say keeping stress down(if that is possible) is a big help and as clarksided said, watching your diet. I am guilty of not being too good at either of those things! LOL! I know your pain, BattleAxe, and it can be scary! Take care of yourself.

OH! And also eating Probiotics is helpful, I hear. Yogurt has live cultures( containing Probiotics) which help IBS and other intestinal problems. Activia is a yogurt brand put out especially for gals and guys like us. It doesn't taste too bad, either!;)

Just in case you read this tonight. I just felt like God put me on this topic. I was praying and came out and got on my computer and looked for this thread though I didn't know it existed.

As someone who has been hospitalized twice for diverticulitis with a contained perforation, I can relate to the pain and yes there are home remedies but the best one I have found is "Metamucil." The reason Metamucil works is because it doesn't allow for extremes in the colon of severe constipation or severe diarrhea and the horrible pain. 1 teaspoon of metamucil in a glass of water daily, lots of water, eating fresh veggies and leaving seeds like sunflower seeds alone. However, eating roughage is encouraged so that it can scrape the lining of the walls of the colon. Reduce fat intake, gravy, cheese etc. You will feel great in about 6 weeks.

I am having a terrible round tonight. I didn't exercise enough this week. I allowed myself to set in one place too long last night because I was on the computer. Be sure to walk around and be as stress free as you can get.

Those are good home remedies!~

Above all else, stay current with your colonoscopies, sigmoidscopies and follow all doctors orders. :)

Praying for you and asking GOD to minister to your body and give you wisdom in all you do regarding this situation. HE is the great physician.

I was diagnosed with ibs about a month ago. My doctor isn't really help at all which is hard. I havent been given anything to take or make me feel better. I feel like giving up. I'm in first year uni and that makes it even harder. My friends are able to go out and have fun but i cant coz i feel unwell most of the time.
I've been praying for the lord to take this sickness away from me and I don't understand why he isn't. If anyone could give me some advice that would be great.

I have done the hospital things several times and almost bledd out twice so do understand your pain. Diverticulosis is a real pain in the left side low and in the neck.

One thing I did that helps is increase water and fiber. I also started drinking less cola and more juice with aloe juice mixed in. Also your colon may be raw from so many antibiotics. I take a probiotic and it does help a lot.

After the fiber and water the biggest thing is to give away the stress as that will kill you with this disease. My last tear I lost 6 pints of blood and looked very pale indeed. It isnt worth internalizing the stress.

1. more fiber. 2. more water. 3. less soda pop 4. less stress.

It is working for me.

:hug:Can you change your doctor/GP at all??

Some doctors are better than others and having a good doctor can make all the difference. I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago (it was actually a false diagnosis for me, as I don't really have bowel trouble). But I have a lot of upper GI trouble which has made my life difficult and prevented me socialising a lot too so I do feel your pain.

I get the impression from your writing style that you are from the UK although I could be wrong. Changing doctors or even changing to a new GP surgery is usually very easy to do over here.

Hope you are feeling somewhat better x

I used to have severe IBS-D. What helped me greatly and all but made my symptoms go away, was to avoid gluten / grains like wheat, plus take fish oil and enough vitamin D3 to keep my testing levels between 60 to 70ng/ml. I'm wasn't positive for celiac on any of the tests, but found I felt much healthier avoiding wheat and other grains.

Best of luck! It's no fun having a GI problem, I know.
