Hey all! I've got a question for you. I'm going to be on the steering committee for or Mothers of Preschoolers group at church. One of the things I need to do is to get people to speak to our group.

If you are a parents of Preschool kids (or every have been:) ), what kinds of speakers would you like to have come and talk?

Topics from the past included:

Kids safety (teaching about strangers and such)
Food safety
Fun activities to do with kids
A chocolate company came to indulge us once:yum:
Raising kids in the faith
Dealing with discipline issues

What would you recommend?

Dental Health is always a good one. Fire Safety as well. The kids love the fire trucks.

So far everything suggested is good. I too need the car seat safety "course". I hate trying to install those things, I always take them to the local PD and have them help me.

I think having something for the parents that doesn't necessarily involve kids might be nice, too. Don't ask me what, though...I haven't advanced to the part where we're thinking of ourselves as well as our kids! :)

You can get a local chef to come speak about fun ways to make lunches for your child.

Invite a bookmobile to come to the group (of course it costs money to buy the books).

Invite a veterinarian to come speak to the group about appropriate pets for a certain age group...or even children with special needs.

Family devotions is #1 in importance and is #1 in neglect in our Lutheran families today.

You can have your 3 year old know the Lord's Prayer, first few commandments and what they mean as well as the Creed.

Your 3 year old can learn to sing beautiful hymns besides "Jesus loves me".

You would be amazed. This is the time (until the child is about 7 or 8 years old) that the children absorb stuff like a sponge. This is the best time to teach them the faith within the context of family devotions.

Tell the women about breaking the Catechism up, repeating each part on specific days:
Mondays: 10 Commandments
Tuesdays: Baptism
Wednesdays: Creed
etc.

After doing this for one year you will be amazed at how articulate your child will be in the faith.

After all, no games, food or safety issue is more important then a solid foundation in the faith.

Oh, and btw: doing this also deals with discipline issues because within the context of talking about what the commandments mean (like honoring mom and dad) children get to listen over and over again what is expected of them which tends to curtail certain behavioral problems.

Car seat & booster seat safety. It's amazing how many car seats are installed incorrectly. Check with your local police dept or hospital to find a trained expert.
We actually know the guy in charge of saftey seat training for our city's fire department. I didn't think of asking him but you're right, it's a great idea.

I like those ideas too, especially about the chef. Thanks!

This is a good idea. About half of the members of our group are not members of our church though so diving into the Small Catechism might be intimidating for them. Many are members of other demoninations and some are "unchurched."
I will say though, that our church has a great program for members on how to do exactly what you're talking about. Maybe we could have the Director of Family Worship at our church talk about the program we offer; it might interest those who are "seekers" in our group.
Thanks!
