Distance Learning

Does anyone have any thoughts on Distance Learning through Christian Colleges?

It is something I thought about, since I don't want to go back to working part-time in order to go back to school.

I am currently in a Distance Learning Program at Liberty University. It is the only possible way for me to get a degree since I am in the military and move or deploy frequently. I have had great impressions, so far, regarding my program. I am working towards an MAR (Master of Arts of Religion). It is a 45 hour degree (15 classes) and can be used later when I go for an MDiv (90 hours total).

I haven't taken any distance learning classes from a Christian college, but I have taken some distance learning classes from an ordinary university. On the positive side, you have more freedom to set your own pace and hours. On the negative side, you have to motivate yourself to study even more that you would if you were actually attending classes and it can be more difficult to contact a prof if you need help. Distance learning works better for some people than for others. If you're highly motivated, good at budgeting your time, and an independent learner then it will probably work well for you. But if you have problems with time management or getting yourself to study or need group discussions to learn effectively then it may not work so well.

I will be taking online classes through Liberty University next semester.

I'll be starting distance learning through the Oral Robert's University's School of Lifelong Learning program for Christian Counseling.

Considering that I already had a couple of years of college behind me and the college here didn't offer anything worthwhile for me...this has been a wonderful blessing, and I can't wait!

One questions I have are How challenging do you find it studying on your own? How do you stay motivated? Do you have exposure to professors? anybody to help you along? Is it internet-based?

Something else I thought of....

isn't it easy to cheat? Because no one is there to make sure you don't have a book or notes next to you when you are doing a test...

Not that I would cheat, but DL seems like an easy way for someone to get grades, dishonestly...

Well, I don't know if it is this way for all online courses but I took one last summer and had to go in for the test. There was a teacher from the school where I was taking the online course from. Others who lived farther away had to get a pastor, doctor, etc. to be there while they wrote the test to make sure they didn't cheat.

Since I don't have time to go to school (had to go back to part-time if I did), I might go ahead an enroll for the Spring semester in Liberty's program. Or, a college closer to me... not sure yet.
