  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Disrespectful to pray while working out?

Hey guys. I really love praying the Rosary (especially the 20 decade!) but often have a difficult time finding time for it, so I usually can only pray a 5 decade.

I also like to work out on a treadmil or exercise bike which takes about an hour. Would it be wrong to use this time for the Rosary or other chaplets? I can watch movies and run, so why not spend the time doing something meaningful.

Your thoughts please.

Not wrong at all as long as you can keep your focus and don't fall into the trap of just saying the prayers without thinking about what you're saying.

I say the rosary every day on my way into work. It helps give me a feeling of calm before the storm and now that I drive through the Big Dig I feel safer knowing that Mary's helping me through it.

Have you ever heard the story of the German Missionaries that survived the Hirsohima bombings. They survived beacause as one priest said "they were living the message of Fatima!"

I love the Rosary, I'm pretty good now at keeping my mind on the mysteries. I think I'll try it in addition to my normal prayers.

I've also read a article about an Opus Dei member who started off her morning with exercise and a Rosary?

I pray while I mow the lawn, while I go for a walk, while I bathe the dog, while I weed the garden....whenever I am doing something alone, then I am in prayer. So, in that case I am truly never alone, because if I am not talking to someone here, on earth...then I am talking to God!

One of my favorite bible quotes:

1Thes.5:16-18
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing in all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

So yeah, pray while you work out...it's better for you than watching a movie anyway!!

Imagine that you were cleaning a chapel. Would you feel it was disrespectful to pray while doing so?

Is not your body a temple?

I don't think I'd worry.

 Pray without ceasing

Monks strive to make all work become prayer. There is no reason the rest of us can't!

I often pray when I work-out, but not continuously through the work-out. I have found that since exercise meets certain needs for me mentally, I don't want to feel guilty about 'wasting' my exercise time with non-productive thoughts!

I usually meditate on adoration with praise and worship music... and just have a running conversation with God inside my head about whatever I am thinking about.
I pray formal prayers between sets when I lift weights. Then too, sometimes I use a Devotional CD while running (rosary or divine mercy chaplet).

I guess my one caution would be to be careful of your surroundings. If you exercise outdoors, prayer can become too meditative and put your physical safety at risk. Not so much of a problem at the gym... just be careful about falling off the treadmill. :sorry:

I've heard of those monks but every time I've tried to google it I haven't been able to get a second source stating that it really happened. It is a very very cool story though and definitely makes me feel safe!

I think that is a perfect time to pray the Rosary or other devotional prayers. Sometimes when I walk, I'll pray the Rosary too.

I think it depends on your attitude toward praying while exercising. It would be bad (maybe not quite bad but certainly not ideal) if you thought, "I can't find any time to pray, I'll just do it while exercising." But it would be good if you thought, "I have all this time while exercising, I could be praying!"

In your case, you're already finding time to pray a five decade rosary, and that's great (better than me, anyway). If you pray more decades while exercising, that's even better. But if you let the praying while exercising replace what you're already doing, I don't think that would be a good thing.

I'm not trying to be cute or anything, I've seriously wondered this. Can we pray while using the bathroom? I mean, God made it so everyone, even Jesus, would have to release waste, so it must be good, right?

I usually try to think about Satan when I'm in the bathroom and I pretend everything I flush is going right into Hell!

Reminds me of a good Jewish joke.

Two students are sitting studying the Torah in Talmud school. One lights up a cigar. The other rebukes him:
"It is forbidden to smoke while reading the Torah! The Rabbi told me so!"
"Oh yes? What, exctly, did he tell you?"
"Well, just that! I asked him if it is allowed to smoke while studying the Torah, and he said: no way!"
The other student laughs. "You stupid oaf, you don't know how to ask. I asked him last week: Rebbe, is it allowed to read the Torah while smoking? He answered: my son, you may read the Torah any time!"
