  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Disputed doctrine.

Christians dispute many things but none more vehemently than the doctrines that divide them. Consider these:
  1. Credo baptism
  2. Sabbatarianism
  3. The number of sacraments
  4. The canon of holy scripture
  5. The use of doctrinal standards
  6. The proper interpretation of the holy scriptures
  7. Symbolic sacraments that perform no effective mediation of any graces
  8. Rejection of confession and penance
  9. Rejection of bishops
  10. Predestination both to glory and to perdition
  11. Submersion in baptism
  12. The real absence
  13. Rejection of vestments
  14. Rejection of the Crucifix
  15. Rejection of prayers to and through the saints
  16. Rejection of postmortem cleansing of souls
  17. ... many many more.
It makes one wonder how Christians can ever hope to find a way to mutual respect and shared communion.

Its the reason for the everlasting gospel message that is to go to the whole world, because the whole world (majority) according to Scripture has followed in false doctrine. We are told to get back to Fearing God, not man Isa 29:13 worship Him who made Exo20:11 Rev14:7 keep God's commandments and the faith of Jesus.

Rev 14:6 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— 7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

8 And another angel followed, saying, “Babylon[f] is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

9 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

The unity of the Church rests not on identifying a small “remnant” group but on the visible, sacramental communion Christ Himself established. Jesus founded one Church (Matt 16:18), entrusted with teaching authority (Matt 28:19–20) and safeguarded by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). The SDA claim that the “majority” of Christians have fallen into apostasy and that only a remnant keeps “the commandments” (Rev 14:12) misunderstands the Catholic position: the Church teaches that the fullness of divine revelation is preserved in the apostolic tradition handed down through bishops in communion with the successor of Peter (Dei Verbum 7–10; Lumen Gentium 8). This is why doctrines such as sacramental grace, episcopal authority, and the communion of saints are not later human inventions but integral parts of the faith received from the apostles.

Catholic teaching affirms that truth is objective and revealed by God, but it also insists that Christ entrusted the interpretation of Scripture to the Church, not to private judgement (2 Pet 1:20–21). The SDA appeal to verses about “truth” (e.g., John 14:6; John 17:17; Ps 119) is entirely valid, yet Catholic dogma holds that this truth is mediated through the living Magisterium, which guards against the fragmentation seen in Protestantism. The early Church universally celebrated Sunday as the Lord’s Day, baptised infants, venerated saints, and believed in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist—practices attested by Scripture (Acts 20:7; Col 1:18; John 6:51–58) and the earliest Fathers (Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr). These are not “false doctrines” but the historic faith of Christianity.

Regarding Revelation 14, Catholic theology rejects the SDA interpretation that the “mark of the beast” refers to Sunday worship or Catholic tradition. The Church teaches that apocalyptic imagery concerns ultimate allegiance to God versus rebellion, not liturgical calendars (Catechism 675–677). The “commandments of God and faith of Jesus” (Rev 14:12) are fulfilled in the sacramental life of the Church, where grace enables obedience (Rom 8:3–4). The SDA rejection of sacraments as effective means of grace contradicts both Scripture—where Christ explicitly gives the apostles power to forgive sins (John 20:22–23), to anoint the sick (James 5:14–15), and to consecrate the Eucharist (Luke 22:19)—and dogmatic definitions such as the Council of Trent’s decrees on justification and the sacraments.

Finally, while the SDA commenter asserts that “God determines the wheat and the tares” , Catholic doctrine agrees—but Christ also established a visible Church to preserve unity (John 17:21). The fragmentation of doctrine listed in your post—baptism, sacraments, canon, episcopacy, saints, purgatory—arises precisely because private interpretation replaces apostolic authority. The Catholic Church does not claim perfection among her members, but she does claim, and dogmatically teaches, that she alone possesses the fullness of Christian truth (Lumen Gentium 14). Unity cannot be achieved by rejecting the apostolic foundations Christ Himself instituted; it is found in returning to them.

Anytime we place a church over the authority of Jesus Christ, we already lost the battle Mat 28:18 Placing "Catholic doctrine" over what He said Jesus told mankind to live by Mat4:4. There is no mediator between us and God except Jesus Christ 1 Tim2:5. There is a reason why we are told the whole world (majority) is deceived. Their fear of God is through mans traditions Isa 29:13 not what God said Mat15:3-14 Mark7:7-13 Exo31:18 Exo20:1-17 Exo20:20 why we are told to get back to fearing God and keeping His commandments Ecc12:13-14 Rev14:6-12 , His version not what man changed Dan7:25

I know there is no agreeing here and that's OK , God will sort this all out in His time. I pray people will study the Bible for themselves to learn the Truth of God's Word according to God, not man.

God bless all and Happy Sabbath!

You’re absolutely right that Jesus Christ alone has all authority (Matt 28:18) and that we must live by “every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). But Catholic teaching does not place “a church over Jesus”; rather, it teaches that Jesus Himself established a visible Church and gave it real authority to teach in His name (Matt 16:18–19; Matt 28:19–20). The Church’s doctrine is not placed above Christ’s words — it is the Church’s Spirit‑guided duty to preserve, guard, and authentically interpret those words (2 Pet 1:20–21). This is why the apostles appointed successors (Acts 1:20–26; Titus 1:5) and why the early Church recognised that “the pillar and foundation of the truth” is the Church (1 Tim 3:15), not private interpretation.

Catholics fully affirm that Christ is the one mediator between God and humanity (1 Tim 2:5) — this is dogma. But Scripture also teaches that Christ shares His mediating work with His Body, the Church, in subordinate ways: the apostles forgive sins (John 20:22–23), the elders anoint the sick (James 5:14–15), and Christians intercede for one another (1 Tim 2:1–2). None of this replaces Christ; it is Christ working through His Church. Likewise, when Jesus condemns “traditions of men” (Matt 15:3–9; Mark 7:7–13), He is condemning human inventions that contradict God’s commandments — not the apostolic Tradition that Paul commands Christians to hold fast to (2 Thess 2:15). Catholic dogma distinguishes sharply between human traditions and the apostolic Tradition handed down from Christ.

The claim that “the whole world is deceived” (Rev 12:9) is true in the sense that sin blinds humanity, but Catholic teaching rejects the SDA idea that the majority of Christians have fallen into apostasy because they worship on Sunday or follow “man’s traditions” . The early Church — long before Rome had any institutional influence — worshipped on Sunday because of the Resurrection (Acts 20:7; Rev 1:10). This is not a change to God’s law but the fulfilment of the Sabbath in Christ (Col 2:16–17). Catholic dogma also rejects the SDA interpretation of Revelation 14, which identifies the “mark of the beast” with Sunday worship; the Church teaches that apocalyptic symbols refer to allegiance to God versus rebellion, not calendar observance (Catechism 675–677).

Finally, Catholics agree entirely that God will judge the wheat and the tares (Matt 13:30) and that every believer must study Scripture faithfully. But Scripture itself warns that private interpretation leads to division (2 Pet 3:16), and history shows this clearly in the thousands of competing doctrines among sincere Bible‑readers. Christ did not leave us with a book alone; He left us a Church with authority, guided by the Spirit into all truth (John 16:13). The Catholic Church does not claim perfection among her members, but she does claim — and dogmatically teaches — that she preserves the fullness of the apostolic faith (Lumen Gentium 14). Studying Scripture is essential, but Scripture must be read within the living Tradition Christ Himself established.

I highly recommend looking at the Scriptures people post to see if their commentary is what the actual Scripture says.

Also, I would caution anyone using Paul to teach what God made as a blessing Exo20:11 for mankind who keeps what He asks Isa 56:2 that Jesus was said made for man that He is LORD of Mark2:27-28 but teach Paul taught against Christ and said what Jesus made for man and what Jesus is LORD of, is against man Col2:14KJV, when Paul said everything has to be according to Christ Col2:8. So if there are no thus saith the LORD to support our understanding of Paul, chances are we are misquoting/not understanding him 2Peter 3:16

So just be careful, read and study everything for ourselves prayerfully ask for the Holy Spirit to guide us from our own understanding of His Word but for Him to guide us in all Truth and reconcile Scripture how Paul told us, everything according to Christ and Christ told us to live by what God said, over what man says Mat4:4

To the law and the testimony, if they do not speak according to this word, there is no light Isa8:20

Let no mans testimony come above God’s own Exo31:18 Deut4:13 to take from it or add to it Ecc3:14 but fear God and keep God’s commandments, His version, mans all, Ecc12:13-14 Rev14:6-12

Christians dispute many things but none more vehemently than the doctrines that divide them. Consider these:
  1. Credo baptism
  2. Sabbatarianism
  3. The number of sacraments
  4. The canon of holy scripture
  5. The use of doctrinal standards
  6. The proper interpretation of the holy scriptures
  7. Symbolic sacraments that perform no effective mediation of any graces
  8. Rejection of confession and penance
  9. Rejection of bishops
  10. Predestination both to glory and to perdition
  11. Submersion in baptism
  12. The real absence
  13. Rejection of vestments
  14. Rejection of the Crucifix
  15. Rejection of prayers to and through the saints
  16. Rejection of postmortem cleansing of souls
  17. ... many many more.
It makes one wonder how Christians can ever hope to find a way to mutual respect and shared communion.
This covers the entire lot!

"The proper interpretation of the holy scriptures."

Thanks for sharing.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth famously said to His Apostles when they complained about others doing things in His name.

" If they are not against us, they are for us".

Unity is in Him not in the things added in His name.

Jesus also taught

Mat 12:30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

Which would also apply to what He is LORD of and what He made for man to bless mankind Isa 56:2 Mat2:27-28 to join and serve our LORD Isa 56:6 and believe and follow all of His teachings such as Mat15:3-14 Mark 7:7-13 Mat5:19-30 Luke6:46-49 Mat19:17-19 Mat4:4 etc.

Jesus never wanted unity at the comprise of what He stood for and taught. Jesus said at the end of time, there would be many (the majority) teaching false doctrine in His name. Why we need to be like Paul, reconcile everything according to Christ not to put what man says over what God says Mat4:4 which is according to Christ.

There is a reason we are told to come out of our false beliefs at the end of time Rev18:4 before its too late Rev22:11 and get back to fearing God and keeping His commandants and worshipping our Creator Rev14:6-12 Exo20:11 Rev14:7 Rev14:12

Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:30 are absolutely true — no one can be neutral toward Him — but Catholic teaching holds that being “with Him” means remaining within the very Church He founded and entrusted with His teaching authority (Matt 16:18–19; Matt 28:19–20). The SDA argument assumes that fidelity to Christ means rejecting the Church, yet Scripture shows the opposite: Christ established a visible, apostolic community to “gather” rather than “scatter” (John 17:21; 1 Tim 3:15). The commandments Jesus cites in Matthew 5, Matthew 19, and elsewhere are fulfilled in Him and lived out through the grace He gives in His Church (Rom 8:3–4). Isaiah 56 and the Sabbath prophecies point forward to the universal covenant in Christ, not a return to the Mosaic sign given specifically to Israel (Exod 31:13–17). The early Christians — including the apostles — worshipped on Sunday because of the Resurrection (Acts 20:7; Rev 1:10), not because they compromised with the world.

Catholics agree entirely that Jesus never wanted unity at the expense of truth. But the claim that “the majority” of Christians teach false doctrine at the end of time is an SDA interpretation, not a biblical one. Christ warned of false prophets, yes, but He also promised that the Church would not be overcome (Matt 16:18) and that the Spirit would guide it into all truth (John 16:13). St Paul does not tell believers to reconcile everything “according to Christ” by private judgement; he warns that Scripture can be distorted by individuals (2 Pet 3:16) and commands Christians to hold fast to both written Scripture and apostolic Tradition (2 Thess 2:15). The Catholic position is that rejecting the Church Christ established is itself a form of scattering, even when done with sincere intentions.

Revelation 18:4 does not refer to Christians leaving the Church Christ founded; it refers to leaving Babylon — the symbol of worldly rebellion against God. Revelation 14:6–12 likewise does not identify the “commandments of God” with Sabbath observance, nor the “mark of the beast” with Sunday worship; these are SDA distinctives, not apostolic teachings. Catholic dogma teaches that the commandments are fulfilled in Christ and lived through grace, and that true worship is centred on the Lamb who was slain (Rev 5:6–10). The call to “fear God and give Him glory” is answered by remaining faithful to the Church He established, not by separating from it. Catholics and SDAs may disagree, but from a Catholic dogmatic perspective, fidelity to Christ includes fidelity to the apostolic Church He Himself created.

Saint Paul wrote the following words about erroneous doctrines:
1Ti 1:3-11 As I exhorted you when going to Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may command certain ones not to teach a different doctrine, (4) nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the stewardship from God which is by faith. (5) But the goal of our command is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and an unhypocritical faith. (6) For some, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, (7) wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

(8) But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, (9) knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and godless, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, (10) for sexually immoral persons, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, (11) according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

There are erroneous doctrines and then there are also superfluous doctrines. There is the firm foundation established by Christ and his apostles, and then there is the tangled mess that man has built upon it.

Christ wants us in one body, and there really is a people who are. Rev14:12 a remnant according to Scripture Rev12:17

God determines what is His Truth, God determines what is righteousness Psa 119:172 Isa 56:1-2 His righteousness is everlasting Psa 119:142 the foundation of His throne Psa 89:14
Translation: the truth is only found in SDA doctrine.

Christians dispute many things but none more vehemently than the doctrines that divide them. Consider these:
  1. Credo baptism
  2. Sabbatarianism
  3. The number of sacraments
  4. The canon of holy scripture
  5. The use of doctrinal standards
  6. The proper interpretation of the holy scriptures
  7. Symbolic sacraments that perform no effective mediation of any graces
  8. Rejection of confession and penance
  9. Rejection of bishops
  10. Predestination both to glory and to perdition
  11. Submersion in baptism
  12. The real absence
  13. Rejection of vestments
  14. Rejection of the Crucifix
  15. Rejection of prayers to and through the saints
  16. Rejection of postmortem cleansing of souls
  17. ... many many more.
In other words many Christians reject the Catholic Church. Yep.
It makes one wonder how Christians can ever hope to find a way to mutual respect and shared communion.
All mainstream (not talking about cults like Mormons or JWs or non trinitarian sects) Christian churches are populated by professed Christians that are bound together by virtue of our love for our Savior. Those churches with close communion are creating the communion division while those churches with open communion welcome everyone that professes the love for Christ. Maybe if the holier than thou churches that believe to be more Christian® than the rest would grow some humility then maybe there would be mutual respect.

It’s fair to want humility and mutual respect, but it’s also worth recognising that the question of communion isn’t usually about feeling “more Christian®” than others - it’s about how a given church understands what the Eucharist is and what receiving it means. Churches with open communion emphasise shared love for Christ as the basis for unity; churches with close communion emphasise doctrinal and sacramental unity as something that must already exist before sharing the Eucharist. You don’t have to agree with that logic, but it isn’t born from arrogance so much as from a sincere (if different) theological conviction. When we acknowledge that both approaches come from people trying to honour Christ faithfully, the conversation becomes a lot more charitable and a lot less combative.

also in true Charity and concern for the immortal soul of all.

1 Cor 11:27 Therefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.
11:28 But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread and drink of the chalice.
11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.

I wonder which one will Christ hold higher, shared love for Christ or doctrinal unity. Sorry but He already chose during His ministry on earth by giving us the two love commandments and not another set of rituals. He was quite critical of rituals actually.

When we acknowledge that both approaches come from people trying to honour Christ faithfully, the conversation becomes a lot more charitable and a lot less combative.
Wow. The only church with the fullness of faith is yours? All others are defective? All others are in error? All others need to come out of the darkness?

I love my fellow Catholics. I am a deacon in my church and there is a Catholic Church about a block away from ours. We have charitable events together, once in a while we have a potluck lunch after church on Sunday, and even have our youth play sports together. Bingo nights are fun. And yet we cannot worship our Lord together in a shared service. They will always have an open invitation. That’s just sad.
