  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Proverbs 13:3
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

I think with the advent of social media, everyone seems to have forgotten being discreet about everything.

Discreetness is also synonymous to modesty and humility, the opposite which is pride, arrogance, and boastfulness.

Keep your mouth shut about.... what? Everything?
Yeah... that was a point I thought about bringing up... That it is a sin to not speak up or out when you should as well... Just many people have trouble discerning when or what that is, their just a bit unsure, under-confident... Or afraid of making mistakes, or whatever...

God Bless!

Well the proverb quoted doesnt distinguish between times to speak and times to be silent. It just says be silent.

That's why I thought about bringing it up...?

Are there any scriptures that talk about speaking up or out when you should and not being quiet all the time...?

God Bless!

I think they are in there, we just don't consider or pay or give as much attention to them as the others, and is probably why many of us can't think of them...

James does say, not to necessarily stay shut up all the time, but to bridle and control your tongue, after all... And exercise self-control with your mouth and words, but, i don't think he means you should be completely mute...?

Especially, should you remain silent and not ever say anything at all, while someone is being tortured to death in very cruel, sick, and perverse and merciless ways, and your supposed to watch and be present and not say anything, should you say something or do something then, or not...?

Being extreme, to the extremes either way, I do not think is good...

God Bless!

Good question, yes there are clear scriptures about it:

John 7:7 and John 14:12, together.

Together, it means we must expose evil deeds.

In the context of being discreet, it is mostly concerning our own lives.

Proverbs is not a rulebook on how to live your life, it's a collection of sayings from biblical times.

It's even right there in the title.

There is a proverb for every situation, so that you can sound smart while throwing it in peoples faces when they mess up.

Also, you have to look at the context. Proverbs 13 deals with avoiding excess. It warns against speaking rashly, against gluttony, greed and other vices and admonishes to be faithfull, honest and true. This specific verse is not about ever saying anything or always keeping your mouth shut, but about Thinking before Talking.

I have no idea. I apologize if I offended you in any way.

I will try to avoid quoting from Proverbs from now on.

The quoted paragraph was in no way directed at you and I didn't actually think about you, neither did I feel offended. As far as I'm concerned, quote away. It makes no difference to me.

Nice!

Otherwise, I agree with your understanding of that verse. That's actually what I mean but in the context of being discreet with our posting habits in the internet, especially social media. You simply misunderstood me.

You said about speaking rashly which is true. And a person speaking rashly also won't be discreet.

Again, my post was not about you, it was about posts like #4 or #5.

You could have said it earlier or at least quoted #4's post and save us this trouble.

I have always thought highly of you Nithavela. But you seem a little off this time or probably didn't recognize me with my new avatar.

It appears to me that the people that talk the most, teach the most, correct the most, debate the most, ect. are unsure of their beliefs.
They have this inner need for others to agree with them and follow their beliefs. Maybe they need to be in control of others. Maybe they have a low self-esteem. Maybe they crave fame. Maybe they fear opposition.

I think it is always best to not speak too much. It reveals weaknesses. The wise listen much and speak little.
