  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Discernment

I am looking for others thoughts and opinions on Discernment of the spirit. I believe I have had this gift since I got saved at 4 years old. I have always been able to sense things about certain people. Like they were hiding something dark in their lives. It scared me when I was younger, but now that I am growing spiritually.. I realize it is a tool used to help others find God. As common as this may seem, I have yet to meet another Christian who has been through what I have. I'd like to share these experiences with others. Please share your thoughts with me.

I believe I have had Discernment since I was saved at 4 years old. I have had strange feelings about certain people all my life. I never understood what was happening. Now I know it's for the purpose of reaching out and praying for others who are falling away from God. I would just like to talk with others who are more experienced with this.

The gift is specifically called gift of discerning of spirits in the Bible.

It is a supernatural ability to see into the spirit realm and literally see the spirit that is behind a problem. For eg, when praying for a sick person, when this gift operates, you may see into the spirit realm and actually see a spirit (perhaps like a little hairy monkey-like creature) clinging on to the body of the sick person. God gives you this insight supernaturally so that you know it is a spiritual problem and know how to deal with it ie cast it out!

This is one "dramatic" way in which the gift operates. But the Bible says there are differents ways this gift is administered/operated.

So yours is another way. ie you may not see into the spirit world but you just know somehow what spirit is operating. Its like you said a knowing in your spirit.

eg: I've heard of a church member who can pick up the spirit of lust when he meets a person with that problem.

note however, that the gift of the discerning of spirits is NOT fault-finding. Any gift from the Holy Spirit must build up the church, edify, set free people etc.

I hope this makes some sense to you. God bless.

You are welcome. Rem you are just a vessel used by the Lord. Do what He tells you to do -- nothing more nothing less. Also, be sensitive, if you know something abt a person and its embarassing, dont shout it out to the whole congregation. Take the person to one corner and with your pastor/elder/witness, make the message known -- dont add to it or substract from it.

Use your gift to glorify Jesus and build up the church.

God bless you with more! :)

I Think what you are describing is not what you think it may be. Discerning of spirits is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit that enables an individual to see into the spirit realm and "discern" what is going on.

I have seen some unfortunate churches where someone would decide that they had this gift and proceed to tear the place up. Everyone had a demon, especially those who disagree. Kind of like the salem witch trials.

Gotta be careful!

Could it also be used to read people, and discern where they are at?

Like, when I talk, I discern alot of times that people are getting bored of me flapping my lips. :p

In other words, either I have alot to learn about the spirit side, or maybe I don't have it, or maybe its not a super strong gift, even though it is a gift??

I used to cross streets when it came to some people. My brothers and sisters and I would all be walking home from school, and I would see this person coming towards us on the same side of the street and I'd stop for a minute, then I'd cross over to the other side of the street and take my siblings with me. Once it was so bad that I didn't even wait to get to a stoplight, I simply stepped out into traffic in an instinctive drive to get away from the thing I saw, almost got hit by a car too. Since then (I might have been 12-15 years old), I've learned to go running to God about people instead of crossing streets, a far easier method by which to deal with something unpleasant to you, far safer too) I still walk by people today and just "know", one of the things I pick up most is any kind of deep sadness and what it is.

There are some days when I pray about 25 times for people I've never seen before/don't know but just knew what was wrong. I've done the same online too, so I guess you don't have to be close or even see the person in some cases. However, I rarely ever tell anyone what I might or might not discern about them, most of the time there just doesnt seem to be any need to. I tend to feel very deeply for the problems of other people, I guess I'm a healer at heart and the gift of discernment is a good way of getting to the root of the problem to heal the person.

Once when I was walking down the street getting off the city train, (it was very crowded in downtown) I walked pass this man laying under some benches (a normal occurence since i live in a city and there are alot of homeless) well something just said to me "stop" and i was in a big hurry because I thought I'd be late for my connecting bus but I stopped. Everyone else was just walking pass this man, some were literally stepping over him and just going about their business...but me I stopped and I looked at him....and there was nothing there but miles and miles and miles of blackness, by blackness I don't mean darkness or evil, almost like when you shut the lights off at night to settle down to bed or when you close your eyes to sleep, not pitch black. There was also this odd stillness, almost the way it would feel if the ocean suddenly stopped swaying, and the currents stopped moving. It was obvious to me that the man was no longer living. It was the first time I'd ever felt led to pray for someone who was dead, but I don't know if I was praying for him or those that might also end up like him.

Anyways thats one story enough about that, all in all discernment can be a handy gift, however it can be a very confusing one as well and if not used according to God's will it can also be very damaging. I must say though that I've never discerned a spirit in anyone truly a child of God, always just around them hovering sort of......however I have discerned them without being on or around a person sort of just there, probably waiting for a clean house to invite them in, usually this is when i bother to tell someone about it, its usually a warning for them not to do something....odd thing is they rarely listen and it usually happens anyway. Another story there about a friend who knew what I was warning her about, knew exactly what I meant but went ahead and did it anyway.

Some of you who posted seem to think that this is some form of judgement upon other people. You couldn't possibly understand what I have went through with this since 4 years old, unless you have experienced it yourself. And yes I have felt the need to talk with the person one on one about this. Of course this doesn't mean I am going to pull them out of Church in front of everyone. There is a civil way to do everything. Of course you must be careful with this. It's not every other person that I see. This only happens with me every few weeks. And it is most often people I don't know very well. It's not just some feeling that I get because I don't like a person.. or the way they look. That is never the case. They are normal, mostly friendly people. God just lets me know they need a little encouragement from him to get back on the right path.

sedatedangel,
I see wisdom in your words already. You are right it is not judement upon other people, it is only to help build others. And no one thing you must never do is to pull anyone out in front of church, this will backfire very dangerously please believe me, this is not a gift that is always an open one. Most of the time it should be a silent gift as far as crowds go. It is usually a private matter between God and the person, and you are but a the vessel the message is being brought through. You want to build people and help them, you never want to knock them down or humiliate them. God doesn't show you these things to harm, and you are so right there is a civil way to do everything, everyone always thinks you need to hammer people and accuse them and make them confess in front of lots of people, but truly God is the only one they need confess to. When you use this gift with God leading, you will not cause harm and no harm will be done to you, before you move towards a person, even if you know you sense something, take a long minute to talk to God about it, there have been many many times when I was told to hold my tongue, and there have been a few times when I wasn't, but those times were never received with any hostility and no one was hurt or humiliated. I think the thing to remember when youre dealing with this is that people all have their "problem areas" and they all have their "secrets" the ones they wouldnt want anyone to know and would be horrified if they did, and they are already affected by what you see so you should take care with them.

1 Thessalonians 5
8   But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.
9   For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
10  who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.
11  Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

That is all I have to say! :p

seriously that is all!!! Lets all encourage each other and build up other up - so that the world may see the church not as a group of people divided - but a group of people who care, love and encourage each other, who are looking out for each others needs, and who are making a positive difference in this world. Okay so, I said a bit more, think that explains it!!!

Hey hotknikkels. Aren't they awesome? Yeah they hail from Dallas Ga. I'm from Atlanta, I know the lead singer Jason, he's really sweet. I'm trying to get their name out, because they are so good, but are really only known to locals. It's a shame you don't live here, we are putting together a concert for this Summer! Anyway, I will talk to Jason about getting you a cd. They were only available at concerts, but lucky for you.. their new album is almost ready. I could send one to you when I get the new ones in, but I would understand if you didn't want to do that. I will definately talk to Jason though. He'll be thrilled to know someone in England likes Exit's music. :)

Wow!!! If you could send me one that would be great. Actually I may be in Dallas in the summer, most prob June/July. I am going to move to Brazil in the summer and I will be going there by Delta Airlines. So then I can visit friends in Atlanta. I am hoping to move to Atlanta and live there for a year in a few years time. I am just gonna see what God's plans are for me and what happens in the future. I really love Atlanta and the students there are dear to my heart. I would love to work with student ministeries there, especially with things like Passion and Louie Giglio. Let's see what God has in the future!!! If you are able to send me the album, that would be so cool, pm me and I will vgive you my address and we can work out some kind of payment!!! ;)
