  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I did a search for this and couldn't find what I was looking for but it seems improbable that this topic hasn't been discussed before.

I'll just come right out and say it, I think it's quite disgusting. You're not gonna find me in a venue where there's going to be much dancing anyway but of course I am very aware of it. Is there anything virtuous in a girl wearing clothes that show off her every curve and then grinding away with a dance partner (male or female)? Just that word "grinding" makes it seem all the more distasteful to me. Is this the modern acceptance of appropriate courtship maneuvers? It reminds me of that picture that shows women's swimming attire through the ages starting with what could be polka dot bed sheets in the early 90's and ending with barely threads in the modern era.

I don't want to start a bloodbath here but I actually wanna hear from the more liberal Christians that support this provocative display if any at all.

A christian doesn't like fun, alert the media.

Just kidding, but in all seriousness, dancing is a good way for a woman to show demonstrate her body's symmetry, which is a good indicator of a strong immune system, and her feminine characteristics, which indicate fertility. These are important factors when choosing a mate.

Idk, I'm moderate and I don't care for that kind of "dancing". Its just stupid IMO. There's absolutely no class involved, no talent involved, and very little rhythm involved.

Waltz, swing and contra on the other hand, is extremely fun.

Agree on Waltz, somewhat agree on swing. (I know how to swing, but its just not my thing)

Contra I'm not familiar with.

Contra is American folk dancing that comes from Irish and English folk dancing. It's looks like loads of fun. There is no grinding and it is very respectful of the body and there is no sexuality involved at all. Youtube has some instructional vids.

I did some looking of it on wikipedia after I posted. It sounds similar to square dancing.

Although that does make me wonder how many Christians would condemn me doing the American Tango.

I really enjoy ballroom dancing, including things like tango, roomba, other styles that are supposed to be sexy and voluptuous. I think its a beautiful form of art and communication. I learned the basics of waltz and swing very quickly, and wow, when you have a partner that knows how to lead, it's almost like it doesn't even matter how experienced you are with dancing.

Its just the grinding type "dancing" that is silly. You are pretending to have sex by dry humping each other to a beat in public. I mean, if thats something you enjoy doing with your partner, by all means do it, but it just seems like a private, intimate activity if you're really gonna get into it. I can't imagine doing it with a stranger.

Thats whats nice about being a woman (follower). If you can get the following thing down, you can do a lot of stuff you havn't been formally trained to do.

However its impossible to lead stuff that you havn't been formally trained to lead.

Thats why men develop at dancing slower then women.

So who's gonna start taking dance lessons :) I know I got a few friends that I could talk into it. And willing (women) dance partners seem to grow on trees :p I've just thrown it out there in conversation before with friends and they always express how they wish their bf or someone would take them.

Its sort of the opposite with me. I started ballroom dancing in college and I competed in 15 different ballroom dance competitions. (14 while in college and 1 out of college.)

My wife however is not much into dancing. She'd like to learn it sometime though.

The biggest problem is that dance lessons can be expensive. In college we learned in group lessons and that defrayed the cost, but our teacher kept us at about the same level. Plus with the guarenteed business and knowing we where college students the teachers often taught for less money then they would elsewhere.

Outside of college its difficult because you almost always have to do it using private lessons. Private lessons are great in terms of development. You can develop far faster that way. But the drawback is they cost alot of money.

I don't dance much anymore, only occasionally. I would really love to get back into regular instruction, get into competition shape, and go out and start competing again. But I guess in a way its sort of like trying to recapture those glory days.

Dancing is important.

I'm not married and so my boyfriend and I don't dirty dance. But I can't wait.
It's all the seduction and the temptation but with the restriction of being in public.
I think it's fabulous. And I believe people that are good at dirty dancing are often better in bed because they learn how the rhythm of a man/woman's body works.
The only thing I'm against is doing it with absolute strangers. I wouldn't want to go out there turning on random men, but I would want to turn my husband on and vice versa.

It's very pompous to suggest that it's inferior to other forms of dancing. Everything has it's time and place and season.

Some degree of sexual display is a pretty normal part of having one's sexuality affirmed. Many see that as provocative, which is can be, but being comfortable with existing as a sexual being is important.

'Dirty dancing' may be quite explicitly sexual, but bikinis, cleavage, dressing well can also signal sexual awareness and enjoyment of one's body.

Its really awkward watching people dance in general. My husband and I went to a formal recently and we, being married, danced closer than normal...and it was fun!

We kept it to a minimum because we were the only married people there. Two of our friends however were grinding all over each other. I was really surprised because they aren't even engaged. Makes me wonder how "safe" their relationship is because they felt everything they needed.

Also there was one couple who slow dance close to each other for EVERY song. Seriously! It was ridicules.

So I think dirty dancing is weird for non married folks, but mainly just be aware of your surroundings. It can make others feel uncomfortable.

ahhhh lighten up people, dancing is just that, dancing. Personally though i must admit that when i have been "grinding" with another woman it is very hypnotic and sensual, probably a risk i could be avoiding but if the lady wants to dance, i ain't gonna say no.

We live in the sad times where people don't get together and dance anymore. People just don't dance like they used to!

Even the VICTORIANS danced more than we do. If you're a younger adult, 'grinding' in a dark club is pretty much all that's there anymore.

How often does a church have a dance party? o_O Or any Christian dance?

David danced - naked.
Miriam probably did a form of belly dancing when the Jews escaped Egypt.

Parts of us were just made to cut loose and dance. We fit pretty well together enough that we can dance together. But if "your right eye causes you to sin", even in your mind... and someone setting themselves up as 'mental sin bait'... You might want to think about why you'd be dancing that way in the first place.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. -- 1 Corinthians 10:31-33

I love to dance! I'm just not very good at it. :D

I think that grinding really is something that shouldn't be done in public. I'd recommend not doing it in private, either, if not married. I think dry humping isn't something that should be engaged in by unmarried people, and that's pretty much what grinding is.

Dancing in general can be good or wack.
