I thought that was what was represented in the fossil record? Species disappearing and never showing up again.
Please keep in mind that the fossil record is only a very small representative of the flora and fauna that was existing at any one time. Considering the vast majority of organisms are never fossilized and then later to last due to geologic processes we're talking a small % here.
It's like take a numerous picture libraries and volumes of photos all showing the progression and relationships of life and then wiping out 95% of it and random. It only allows for a small snap shot of what was once existing & how they are related.
Species do disappear (extinction) but it doesn't follow that just b/c speciation occurs that one branch off of that speciation event (parent or daughter) has to go extinct.
