Nowadays we accept some Therapods had feathers. Their skeletons have a number of similarities with birds in the pelvis etc. But they were extinct by 65 million years ago.

Phorusrhacidae or Terror Birds lived in South America from 62 million years to about 2 million years ago.

Three million years is a very short gap between the two, who appear very similar. Fossil records are by nature fragmentary so why aren't Terror Birds considered just a continuation of the Therapod Dinosaurs? Is there some big difference I am missing between them?
