I prefer the Canon Rebel XT, I own one and use it professionally and I personally believe compared to the Nikkon the picture quality is better and it offers a bit more. I wouldn't use anything else.

I have a Nikon D80 and it's amazing. I had been stuck with a point and shoot for four years before I got the nikon, and it was a startling transition.

Both Canon and Nikon cameras are superb. I went with Nikon because I liked the feel better, but honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
