Digital picture organization

I am looking for a way to organize my digital pictures on my computer. I have many (over 3000) pictures in many different catagories eg. work, travel, church, friends, family ect. I would like to be able to be able to search using key words assigned to them.

Any ideas out there?

if you have a Mac then iPhoto is the obvious choice; Windows users could try Ashampoo's Illuminator. I've not used this but it's supposed to be quite similar to iPhoto.
