  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm looking for recommendations for what I can best describe as an offline version of Blue Letter Bible (so multiple translations, plus concordance and strongs).

Is Bibleworks any good? It's flipping expensive though! :o

Are there any good suggestions on here?

All polite suggestions gratefully received. :)

Logos Bible Software along with their mobile app - Bible - is the best. It is, indeed, expensive. Maybe a Christmas present? It's the best $500-$1000 investment you can make in your study of Scripture. You won't regret it.

I'm not sure what you are looking for when it comes to features, but I use YouVersion. It has quite a bit of versions to choose from and download for offline use for free. The app itself is free. My dad also uses Logos, but it is VERY expensive and he's been using it for more than a decade. He says it is the best thing out there for study.

Yes, I've just seem them on the web too.

$265 for the starter level ($1,000 is a bit more than I can seriously manage at the moment, being all out of money trees :o).

What does the starter level come with? They also offer student discounts.

Am looking at Logos' website now.

$566 for the the Bronze (which is when Strong's starts to appear in the collection). That's a lot of pennies!

What I'm looking for is a selection of Bibles (KJV, ESV, ASV, NIV, NLT, LXX, plus Strongs as an absolute minimum) all operating in a manner akin to Blue Letter Bible (which is brilliant online but useless when the net goes down or I'm not next to my laptop).

Not a lot, sadly. :(

And I'm not a student so I doubt there will be any discounts for me.

Well it may not come with a lot of resources but its search tools alone are worth that $300 price. Plus you can always build up your library over time. I buy all my commentaries digitally through Logos now. I'll never have to haul around big books again.

Try The Word. It works offline, and the software and many of the modules are completely free, except for the usual (and unusual) relatively inexpensive add-on modules (multiple dictionaries, commentaries, maps, sermon collections, Christian books, bibles, etc.), of which there are thousands you can choose from. They also have bible downloads for phones, too. What I LOVE about it is the unlimited personal notes storage of bible books, chapters, and verses you can create. It also has the capability for individualized layouts for your favorite translations, books, etc.

I would love to have Logos but I cannot afford it either.
I presently have Olive Tree on my Nook. It is reasonable, works well, and you can add to it as you can afford to. It works offline.

Indeed, that's the only thing I dislike about it, however, I do see why it costs so much. So much thought and detail was put into the software and how it works. That's a lot of hours put into it!

Ahh, why not start with YouVersion? It doesn't have the Strongs though, but it does have many versions. Take a look! :D

There are several excellent freeware Bible study programs that also offer many free addons. Free addons almost never include newer works that are copyrighted. They involve royalties that must be paid. The price is reasonable on most of them (i.e. $20 to $40 each). Newer Bible translations like the NKJV, NASB, NIV, and AMP would be examples.

Three of my favorites are Bible Analyzer, TheWord, and e-Sword. All come with a nice selection of free addons. Bible Analyzer comes with the smallest number of free addons. TheWord has thousands of free addons, but e-Sword has the most. I must add that many of the best addon modules are older and free. Bible Analyzer charges small fees for quite a few modules that are free in TheWord and e-Sword. All three have many free downloads available from within the programs after installation.

The "And Bible" on Android is free. It's a Sword Project front end. I still use You Version as my main reading Bible, but I have the And Bible with ESVS (ESV w/Strong's Numbers) and Strong's Greek/Hebrew installed. The modules are downloaded to your device so they work offline.

There are several commentaries available, they're in the public domain so they're quite old, but will still give you a help in your studies.

It's no logos/accordance, but does its job well! It's also open source, and I'm a Linux user/nut.
