I thinks someone's already mentioned this but just to put it out there again in very clear terms.
Samuel mentions only a few lines later, within the very same chapter that you are not to think of God as someone who changes his mind.
God knows all true statements, and just to clarify God knows that it is true that all false statements are false. That is to say God has all knowledge, he knows the end from the beginning. Regret for God is the best way your limited human intelligence can grasp a concept.
Many of the old testament Kings are an example for us. Not how to act but rather how not to act.
How could we appreciate the sunshine if not for the rain?
God shows us again and again in the old testament, that his kingdom is not of this world and that no sinful man be it David or Saul is fit to rule God's kingdom.
Only God can rule his Kingdom and his will is righteous, whether we think so or not.
It was questioning of God's authority that got us all here in the first place. Those who enter God's kingdom will know this truth and know it well.
Here's a question for you:-
God has told us that we will judge angels:-
Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 1 Corinthians 6:3
What if God asked you to execute his judgement against your own son. As he did with Abraham...
Would you do it?
By the way if there's any peps out there that thinks their hearing any strange voices, it's probably not God. I'm sure God would make things very clear to you if he intended you to do something.
But my apologies, back to the question. Would you? Would you do it...
