Difference between praying in your native tongue compared to other language?

Hello.

By nationality, I am Romanian, speaking the same language. Born and baptized with it, denomination Christian-Orthodox. I usually read and pray the bible using the English language. Very rarely, if ever do I read/pray the Romanian versions. Last night, however I prayed Psalm 91 in Romanian, and had a lot of nightmares during my sleep. Things that I am afraid of came into my dreams. I'm wondering if there isn't a connection. Praying psalm 91 in English doesn't have the same effect.

Is there a difference between the language you pray/sing/read in? If you are baptized with a specific language, is it possible, that one to be more "powerful" than any other?

For context, I dream, a lot, and most of them come true. But they are not always of the Lord. So one must be extremely careful.

Thank you.

Well the Psalms were were originally written in Hebrew. So any other version whether it be English or Romanian, is going to be the Psalms in a secondary language. And I can't imagine any reason why God would prefer English over Romanian.

I am aware of the original language, but we weren't baptized in Hebrew. That's what I'm thinking. Besides, this is an attack. Recite some words, and have nightmares? Why wouldn't be the same in English if that were so?

This sounds like something you created in your mind. There's nothing in scripture or any doctrine I've ever heard of which addresses it. Lots of people have been baptized in Latin, who don't speak or read Latin.

If you notice more power in the prayer, it might be because God is more focused on than the meaning of the words.

By accident I prayed the lord's prayer in Romanian. It just came out, I intended it in English. One hour after I fell asleep, I woke up with the thought of some hideous black creature moving towards me. Everything felt real.

It just doesn't make any sense. I know the English language very well. There's no reasonable explanation for this other than... the demons are tied to the geographical location, and only understand the local language. Whatever it is, it is highly affected by the Romanian language.

I do not believe I am the first to notice this. (And if I am, it is very bad. New tactics, new hidden measures...)

Hi Prudent_commenter

Have you looked into your family history at all? It seems as though whatever is causing those nightmares in some way feels that it has a "right" (which it doesn't) based on perhaps your heritage which can be signififed by speaking in your mother tongue. But you are now a new creation in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Galatians 2:20) and so whatever has been agreed upon in the past has no authority over you now.

I only speak English unfortunately but recall that the more I studied the Bible the more resistance I got in the form of nightmares etc. It turned out in my case that there was a connection with things that had happened in the past. The more I immersed myself in the Word of God, the less the attacks came.

Try reading Galatians 2:20 out loud in English and then in Romanian. Believe that verse as you read it out, memorise it so that it is imprinted in your mind. You are renewing your mind as you memorise and believe what the Bible says about you. Just before bedtime, have some worship songs playing in your bedroom. With your gift of dreams, the other thing I tend to do is ask the Lord to guard my mind from nightmares and protect the body as I sleep. I then give thanks to the Lord for the blessing that His protected sleep will bring me. All this I say out loud as I pray to our Father.

Let us know here whether you notice any difference over time.

If it is something from my ancestors, would it only respond/react to the language it came? My family only knew their native language, and nothing else.

I read the bible all the time, but I'm not attacked when in english. Only in my native tongue.

Is there anything else I should read? I typically chant the psalms.

I suspect there's something, but it's likely from my parents or grandparents. From me it's impossible because I kept all the commandments, and life a righteous life.

I think your experiences are more psychological than spiritual.

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

God searches our heart and mind and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us.

So it doesn't matter to God what language you pray in. God is above and beyond that. He's known your heart and mind in every prayer you'll ever make since the beginning of time. Matthew 6:8

Maybe Romanian has psychological significance for you that triggers your fears.

Sometimes pray in Latin and Spanish but have not noted any differences in how they affect me.

What books of the bible should I read for this? And what time should I read it at?
I typically read the bible in the morning, but for this case, I'm not sure.
It;s likely an evil spirit. I read the entire Galatians yesterday in both languages, and it caused a dream which I fear the most. A nightmare is something that you fear, but there are things that you fear more than others. It gives me thew things I fear the most, and not just any thing I fear.

A good starting point is to have a Bible plan. Have one that works around your own personal schedule. In my case, I have a paper version which essentially takes me through a section of Psalms/Proverbs, a chapter of the New Testament, then a chapter from the Old Testament. The plan I use gets me through the whole Bible in 2 years.

It's not set in stone though, so to speak - when I was raising my kids I wasn't able to do it every day, before kids, I was. With me working full time, I'm not as consistently working through the plan as I was before having kids. So don't worry if that is the case with you as well. The main thing is to do what you're currently doing - getting to know the Lord through His Word.

Another thing to add is to try to get yourself into some kind of Bible Study at your church. As the saying goes "iron sharpens iron". When you study the Bible with other believers you can then go deeper into its meaning especially if your priest or pastor has studied Hebrew and Biblical Greek. By regularly studying God's Word you will find that your logical mind begins to catch up with your spirit (see Romans 12:2 ).

Thirdly, or should I say firstly :) keep praying to God, give thanks to Him, praise Him. :) He has given you the gift of dreams and intends to use you mightily to bring others to come and know Christ.

I typically read the bible in the morning, but for this case, I'm not sure.

The mornings are my best times too. :) Just a good quiet time when you can worship God and sit in His presence.

It;s likely an evil spirit. I read the entire Galatians yesterday in both languages, and it caused a dream which I fear the most. A nightmare is something that you fear, but there are things that you fear more than others. It gives me thew things I fear the most, and not just any thing I fear.
There could be a number of reasons why this is occuring. Sometimes it can be something as innocent as a game we've played or a movie we've watched. Take this to the Lord and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what it was that made this thing come. Think about whether you've always had this, or whether it started recently as well. Ask the Lord to reveal what the trigger was, as it will then help to completely close it down (a bit like closing an open door that we didn't know was open).

When I was plagued by nightmares I was quite new to my faith and I confess that I truly didn't know who I was in Christ. I came to know the Lord after spending my adult life as an atheist and so had ran the gauntlet of pretty much most of the worst horror movies Hollywood could create, plus some nasty console games. So initially, I didn't have a clue as to who I had become on getting saved. But the enemy did. So, there was a need for me to repent (to turn away) from previous actions I'd unwittingly done before becoming a Christian.

I did not realise that according to the Bible - amongst all the truths in it - I was now:

- A child of God (John 1:12)
- I am a daughter of God and one in Christ (Gal 3:26, 28)
- I am a new creation and the old me had gone (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- I am chosen of God, Holy and dearly loved (Colossians 3:12, 1 Thessalonians 1:4)
- that I have been crucified in Christ, and I no longer live but Christ lives in me and I live by faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20)

These are just to name a few. But it took time immersing myself in God (praying/ worshipping) and reading the Bible/going to Bible study before my mind began to catch up with what God actually says about me in His Word.

The main turning point is the Biblical truth that God hasn't given us a spirit of fear which is found in 2 Timothy 1:7. Fear is a spirit which hasn't come from God. Instead, God has given us a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. The other turning point is Luke 10:19. Jesus said that He has given me and you (and all believers) authority over ALL the power of the enemy. The enemy knows this also but doesn't want us to know this.

My thinking behind my earlier reply was to suggest, that you continue to use Bible verses to state who you are in Christ. As an old teacher, this was a learning method I used to use with my students. By repeatedly speaking outloud a statement that needs to be remembered, it will eventually become entrenched into your short term memory (will renew it). Once it's stuck in our mind, nothing can shake it. Jesus used Himself as our example when He was in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. He rebuked satan with verses that He was certain of and believed in, which meant that He was able to state it with confidence when challenged by satan. As a result, satan left Him. It will strengthen your faith as you walk with Christ by continually doing this.

If you get woken up after a nightmare, declare 2 Timothy 1:7. Then state Psalm 4:8 as a statement of truth to yourself before laying back down to sleep.

Over time, you will get to a point when in both English and Romanian you will confidently state who you are in Christ and command fear to leave you alone. It may try to hang around in an attempt to falter your faith but eventually it has to obey you and leave. :)

Apologies for this being so long. Be encouraged, brother and I will continue to keep you lifted in prayer.
