• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am over weight from my meds and have a hard time lossing weight , so I started taking all natural weight loss pills . I researched well before buying them and found them to be safe .

Once I started taking then with in two weeks I could not sleep and my heart was racing and I found my self in a depressed mood as well as manic . I stopped taking the pills and in two day I can feel my self getting better again .

So I guess what I am saying is all natural does not always means it is ok for a bipolar person to take . We need to remember that our system works different and we need to be careful what we take or it can give us systems we don't want .

Does anyone have any ideas on weight loss

I’m in the same boat you are. Last year me and the Lord worked on my eating. As a result I didn’t lose any weight but I didn’t gain any either. This was amazing because not only am I bipolar and have hypothyroidism, I’m also peri-menopausal/menopausal. My Gynecologist told me the problem is my metabolism. I don’t have any.

So during the time that I was working on my eating, I also was trying different exercise stuff. I got a walking dvd called Walk Away The Pounds by Leslie Sansone. It has 5 workouts on 1 dvd. It does get you to move. My problem was I wasn’t committed.

I settled with doing “strength training” with free weights. All my research was pointing me in this direction. The video I’m doing is called Cougar Workout (lol...I know...I know) by Joyce Vedral. It’s graduated weights (3 lbs, 5lbs, 10lbs) with decreased reps. The more weight the less reps. I got the video from the library before I bought it. In viewing I understood it and it made sense to me. I also suffer from arthritis, so it’s the best workout for me. I had her book The Fat Burning Workout and thought if I could only get this on video that would be great. Well the Cougar Workout is basically the Fat Burning Workout with some variation. Also Joyce Vedral is in her 60’s I think and that woman looks good! So as an older woman she gets it. She’s also funny at least to me. I’ve been doing this workout for maybe 3 months now and I can truly say I see changes in my body and I am committed to this.

I also have a Stamina Inmotion E1000 Elliptical which I us as a “peddler”. There’s a real testimony of how I got this but I try to peddle at least 10 minutes a day. Makes a night and day difference concerning my legs. There are “peddlers” that you can put on your table and do upper body work.

My favorite choice was hula hooping. Who can’t hula hoop? Well apparently I can’t! LOL. I got all the stuff off the net and made my own. I was soooo excited. I just knew I could do this but I could only do about 3 rotations and then it would fall. I tried over and over to no avail. So I had to stop because it was discouraging me and that was turning into depression BUT it’s not over. Somewhere in the future, I’m gonna try again and as God is my witness I WILL hula hoop!!! LOL

Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. I drink this primarily for my joints and it works but it has a weight loss benefit. It has a lot of benefits. I've not had any side effects. You should google this.

I don’t know if I’ve said something of interest to you - I hope so. I’ve always known I couldn’t do a pill or surgery. I don’t even do a “diet”. I do a grocery list so I’m aware of what I’m bringing into my home. Portion control does work if you can get there but it takes time. I also do Brita water filter system. I actually started with drinking more water. It was the place of least resistance.

That’s all I got for now!

Be careful! I recently took a diet pill because I'm over weight myself. The diet pill contained stimulants in it and ended up sending me into a hypo manic state! Be sure to read the label closely!

ST.Paul , that is just what happened to me . It was all natural so I thought it was safe , wrong so of those all natural ingredients we stimulants and it caused me not to be able to sleep and put me in a mixed state of depression and manic . I stopped them and after a week I was much better . So my advice to everyone is check out what the all natural ingredients are and what they do .

I'm just curious...do you guys mind sharing what diet pills you were trying?
I've seen the various commercials on TV and have wondered.

I know as manics we have to be really careful. Actually I think bipolars are the perfect group to try diet pills on because if it works for us, odds are it would work for most people.

Unfortunately natural doesn't mean a thing when it comes to labeling. If it's not labeled organic, anything could be in it. Organic is the one with Federal standards. I know...I know...I thought natural meant healthy and/or pure. It doesn't.

I've never heard of those. I'm gonna look it up. There's so much stuff out there on the market. I wish there was something I could take, but then that would be another pill and I don't want that. It's sooo hard when you know your weight gain is from medication and some people assume it's from overeating *sigh*.

Hello

I find exercise and eating and drinking water or Gatorade (moderate) does help loose weight, simple walking does wonders for me, strengthens my back, legs, lungs and heart.. I want to start toning my body down but wow I feel great but there's few things to that help with weight loss cant mention it here. But diet pills I don't think is the best answer I think its eating right and exercise to your body type and ask your Dr first be sure your in good health before doing any exercise.. Just remember moderation is the key, as they say Rome is not built in a day same with weight-loss it can come off or gained back, the hardest part is maintain it consistently.

Yes, thanks to Lithium I gained 60+ pounds in 5 years but it is/was effective. I then was switched to davalprolex (Sodium based) and it seems to work a bit better- but holy cow! It took 25ish years to find SOMETHING that'd work. Anyhow- I've got liver, kidneys, 2 kinds of arthritis, high blood pressure, GERG and some other stuff- I'm sick enough the Veterans Administration has given me a "Doctor in a box" that I MUST report every 24 hours or the VA will send out their special police to see if I'm alive- or not.

The wifey-poo and I went to a hospital in Federal Way, Washington (Small township south of Seattle) and went to a 3 hour seminar to see about "stomach banding". After seeing all the things that could go wrong (And theres a lot that can go wrong!) the wife and I both left after being scared witless! Plus a price tag of $20,000 each....?? Well they do give a discount if you go to Mexico down to $11,000.00

I just had my appendix out and they fixed a umbilical hernia (My intestine was trying to escape out of my belly button) on the 5th of July and sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing gets old. Anyhow- I told the Surgeon "Its 100 points for the hernia, 100 points for the appendix, 2500 bonus points if you put a lap band in, and 25,000 bonus points if you put a lap band around my wifes mouth so she'd quit complaining!" The surgeon was female and didn't appreciate the humor!

I'd first advise getting a blood test to check for food allergies. These can cause you to gain weight because of your body reaction to allergens.

Eat small portions. Do not drink anything when eating. Or if you have to clear your palate take one or two sips of water only. If you consume liquids while eating you'll [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] the digestive processes in your stomach when the enzymes that are released so as to break down and absorb food nutrients end up floating in a vast liquid/food soup.

Exercise. Walk, find online exercises at your desk that you can do. If you burn more calories than you consume you'll lose the weight.

For the person who was taking the Bio-Lab Diablo product, it contains Ma Huang. Which is ephedrine. No longer able to be manufactured in products due to its properties being used in the ephedra form to make crank.

Ma Huang is a stimulant, a vasoconstrictor,(constricts blood vessels) and is great as a decongestant clogged nasal passages. However, it can over stimulate the heart because it is an herbal upper but because of the upper or increase in metabolism and the constriction its properties cause at the same time, it is not advised for those who have high blood pressure due to the constriction of the veins and therefore the impediment of blood flow combined with blood thinning and increase in heart rhythm.
It is never recommended for obese people due to high blood pressure symptoms, which Ma Huang will exacerbate.

The Diablo product also contains White Willow Bark. Which is natural aspirin, which is a blood thinner, which will also effect high blood pressure symptoms. Especially if one is already on a prescription medication to treat HBP.
These combinations, Ma Huang and White Willow Bark (Asprin) on an obese person can cause havoc with the heart rhythm. But because of the upper effects on the body it restricts the hunger pangs and depletes appetite.
Other side effects, besides heart arrhythmia, insomnia, from prolonged use of Ma Huang, is chronic constipation.

Avoid if thyrotoxicosis - over-active thyroid gland. Avoid if restless or have anxiety states. Adverse effects include: headache, irritability, restlessness, nausea, sleeplessness, rapid heart beat, hyperthermia, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness and increased blood pressure. May lead to heart attacks, strokes and even death.

Vitamin B-Complex is a great natural energy source that you can acquire through diet or supplements. Get with a nutrition expert at any health food store for the best advice for your body type and lifestyle/diet.
