Personally, I think this is a very small part of German history. And while I feel facts should never be ignored and things like this should not be forgotten about; I think there is far too much attention paid to it. As a high school student in the United States I learned more about Nazis and the Holocaust than I did about my own country's atrocities (like giving Native Americans small-pox infested blankets). If you are in a German class you should be learning about German culture. Now that I live in Germany, I can see that the primary impact the war had on German culture is that so many peoples' homes were destroyed and so many historic landmarks are gone forever.

It's a big topic in Austria too...just recently our country had to give back some Klimt-paintings to Jews in the US cause they took them away during the war....

I personally think we should stopp giving everything back...the whole war was a bad thing but it's not fair that the next generation now has to pay everything back without getting anything we lost back (my great-grandma was living in Slovenia when the war started - she had to get away from there, leaving everything behind....and we never got anything back)...

But all together I think it's also a good thing to learn about it in school cause it might help prevending similar things from happening in the future....

actually we were looking at the reparatopmszahlung as part of the cause of getting hitler into power etc, coupled with economic problems,

its interesting, you would think that the rest of the world would no try to go down the same path again by demanding all these things being paid back

What I found a bit strange is that there are actually people neglecting that any of this has ever happened at all.....

And it's sad it's happening in other places right now - but at least it will not happen again in Germany/Austria (I think)

i hope that all people will wake up and that something like this will never happen again in any part of the world.

and yes i think it's important to learn all the things about that dark area in our history.
but i think it's also important to learn about those who fight against all this. people like friedrich bonhöffer or sophie scholl and her brother. and all the others who were murdered by the nazis just because they said the truth and they fight against hitler and the nazis.

Sadly it still happens in many African countries. If you remember back to 1994, there was a mass genocide in Rwanda because of a hate that had been part of everyone's life for hundreds of years.
However I can't imagine this happening again in Germany or Austria. The history that is taught in the schools there is designed to make sure it never happens again.

History is a very interesting subject, unfortunaltly it's coloured by the victors too much. People only learn dates, numbers and statistics of wars. But the question 'why' is never asked.

Everybody knows the war started in '39, but why? usually it's answered by 'hitler was a madman and wanted to take over the world'. Which is total non-sense by the way.

When people think of WWII, the 'holocaust' comes to everybody's mind. Eventhough jews were only 4 million (the rest of them were killed by artificial famines and einsatzgruppen out on the field) of the 13 million who died in gaschambers. People should not ignore the other tens of millions casualities and not only concentrate on 'jews jews jews'.

and what do you think why did ww2 started?
and sure we should not forget for example the sinti and roma, the homosexuals and others who were murdered by the nazis. btw 4 mill is not correct. there were 6 mill jews killed by the nazis.

Says who? All of the Hollywood films you saw? Four millions of jews were gassed. Fact. 120 give or take jews were executed by Einsatzgruppen out on the field. fact. 20 or so thousands died of famine in getto's. Fact.

Why the war broke out? It really depends on where you set the start mark. Was it when Hitler annexed Austria and Chechoslovakia or when he annexed half of Poland?

If you take the date when Hitler invaded Poland, then he did it (together with the USSR btw) because ethnic Germans were maltreated by the more or less new Polish state.

Don't forget that he didn't declare war on Europe, France and Brittain declared war on him. Just before he overran France and took Holland and Belgium on his way to France.

Further in time, there are controversial documents that state that Stalin had plans to attack Germany in the spring/summer of '42. That was Hitlers reason to start a series of Kesselschlacht's in Russia in the summer of '41.

I'm not white-washing his crimes in the countries involved, just trying to explain my view on his actions.

Calling is Hitler a madman is nonsense when looking at other leaders in his time. Hitler was preaching an ethnically pure Europe (note: only Europe). Trotskiites in Russia wanted a world wide communist revolution. England already possesed half of the world. Even the Polish authorities were speaking of conquering some African nations to use them as colonies.
