The answer is both yes and no....trumpets, flutes, lyre...all were common instruments. If one reads the pslams, particularly psalm 150, one gets a good overview of the instruments used. However, despite what it says in the Psalms, by the time Jesus was Born among us, Temple worship with instruments had been done away with, and He would have heard only the human voice in chant at the Temple, and in Synagogues. This, incidentally, is why the early Church did not allow instruments in church either.

There certainly weren't "genres" back then, just regional differences from place to place. In the Roman empire, they also had secular folk music and the like, so that might have been present in some of the places Jesus went.

Music is such a universal human activity that I believe Jesus would not only have heard it but participated. Even if instruments had vanished from the Temple, I suspect every village would have had somebody who played something, like small towns in rural America now do. I like to believe Jesus would have had a fine singing voice, but of course it's not essential for us to know.

Certainly we are all encouraged to "sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs," and the Psalms--the original praise music book--covers the full gamut of human emotions, from black rage (#137) to deep despair (#22, #69) to quiet confidence (#23) to high joy (#100, #150).

I'm personally very partial to this one.
