Today I was diagnosed with an incurable illness which gives me a life expectancy of about 10-15 more years. It causes damage to the liver until a transplant is needed to survive. I've been researching the Christian view of organ transplantation, and every article I read which gave it any serious thought concluded that it would be wrong to accept a donated organ.

I don't really know how to process all of this. In particular I'm very worried about not outliving my mum, who has mental problems and I am her carer.

tammylouise, praying for you! God bless! They told Doddie Osteen that she had only two weeks to live. With that kind of hope her and husband John went home never to return. They went to all the famous evangelists of the time including Oral Roberts and nothing helped. I heard of her testimony in which she said that it was only when she took the issue between her and Jesus alone that improvement was seen. She tells of the ordeal in the following video.

Those don't sound like the articles I meant. The ones I read talked about the concept of brain death. The term was invented solely as a justification for taking organs, and even now medical science still debates whether or not it is valid.

When someone is declared brain dead, most of their bodily functions continue to work. Their bodies regulate levels of water and produce urine. They can still digest food and metabolise nutrients. Their injuries heal. They often respond to surgical incisions, with muscle spasms and increase in breathing and heart rates, so organ donors have to be anaesthetised before the surgery. A "brain dead" woman can deliver a live baby up to 100 days later. Children who are brain dead continue to grow and will go through puberty. Sometimes residual functioning can still be detected by an EEG even after a person has been declared brain dead. There have been cases of people waking up hours after being declared brain dead. We have no way of knowing that the person would not have recovered in time.

If I agree to have a liver transplant, the doctors will take that liver from someone who is still alive, someone who has to be anaesthetised because they can probably still feel it happening. The doctor ends their life, maybe prematurely. They would have to end someone else's life to save mine.

Tammy: 1) organ donors legally consent to have their organs harvested and 2) brainwaves and heartbeat are what allow people to live. people can be kept on a respirator, but if they do not have brainwaves, they aren't alive. it's not like a coma, where the person still has brainwaves. these people are brain dead. that means they have already died, scientifically and legally. here's an article describing brain death: Why brain dead is really dead - CNN.com

HI tammy, yes I haven't been diagnosed with it. but I know I have a liver condition that goes with celiacs disease. if you do or don't know you have celiacs or sometimes they might get a diagnosis of "mitochondria disease" or autoimmune , but this is the one I think I have .
Primary biliary cirrhosis Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic

you might want to do lot more research into that.
I do know I have some liver condition and I through time found that all the foods that were healing to me, or made me feel better , or made my skin normal were ones which improved liver function. I can't live with out citrus especially grapefruit and garlic and tea ... then my kids figured out the celiacs and jello/egg/milk collagen and albumin etc issues we all have in our line. then the liver foods that were healing me made more sense.

you will want to do some research into those foods and herbs . things like grapefruit , celery, greens, green tea , lots of things I cant live with out. artichokes/ milk thistle ..

so yes I am praying about the same issues. and I don't think now that I will do anything like a transplant.
I don't have a clue how long I have and I think I will keep it that way . I don't think it is their or anyone business business.. when I went to them ages ago for help .. they wanted to put me on happy pills and I told a few of them off real good . and now I don't want their help now I figured it out myself and God and my family . they didn't have any part of that , I doubt they will have any real fix for it either. besides as I suspected PBS 's folks just dont handle drugs well..
with the new insurance laws I just don't want to play with them like that . I might let them cut something out but I really don't want them putting anything back in..
but I think with proper ( for my body ) and healing diet is going to be my best bet , unless the Lord wants to heal me and I been asking him that since i was 12..and chronic pain .
that wasn't in the program yet. but who knows.

here is a good start on some clues that might help you find or research maybe why liver damage might be happening in you..
14 Foods that Cleanse the Liver - Global Healing Center

I added artichokes celery peas and cilantro and most herbs in the garden to that list .

I will be praying for you ! I hope this might help you find what might help. With any kind of liver disease these common liver loving foods will probably help you a lot!

I know this is an old thread. Trying to revive it. I was diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis, also called PBC, in 1993 or so. As you can see, I have lived past their "6 months to 20 years" life expectancy and have recently been doing fairly well.

Praise God!!!!!

Oh, wow! Have I misunderstood the term "orthodox" as it is used on CF??
Thank you!

Yes, it had me confused too, till i asked about it (i'm non-denominational) and i was reassured that it simply means those who trust Christ as their Savior, like you n' me

Remembering tammylouise in prayer. Praying that the sickness would flee her body and leave her with a healthy liver in Jesus name. Also taking these needs to God the Father in prayer on the 1:15PM BBNRadio.org Family Altar Program. http://www.christianforums.com/users/335999/
