Today I was diagnosed with an incurable illness which gives me a life expectancy of about 10-15 more years. It causes damage to the liver until a transplant is needed to survive. I've been researching the Christian view of organ transplantation, and every article I read which gave it any serious thought concluded that it would be wrong to accept a donated organ.

I don't really know how to process all of this. In particular I'm very worried about not outliving my mum, who has mental problems and I am her carer.

oh, honey! what articles are you reading? i don't see what would ever be wrong about accepting a donated organ. they are harvested from people who have a desire to allow their death to help someone else live. now, to me, that sounds like what Jesus did for us!! praying for you to be comforted and to find other sources for your information.

God gave us the technology to be used for life. Take advantage of the hope that it can give you. Please do not be dismayed at all this. It is hard on the ears and hard on the heart. Put your eyes full on Jesus and focus on HIM. He will restore your joy. We will pray hard for you my dear. You are worth the fight! God bless you and chin up. Never let your hope get dashed. Your hope is in Jesus. A worth while place to rest it.

Heavenly Father please help this woman. Please Father have compassion on her and move over her in mighty ways. Let YOUR will be made complete in her. Lord I love YOU so much and thank YOU for the chance to pray for her. I praise YOUR glorious name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I can't posts links to the articles I read because I don't have enough posts yet. If you have time you can find them the same way I did. I searched the keywords "Christian organ donation" in Bing. The spindleworks one and the renewamerica one both explain it very well.

Miracles occur when doctors say there are little hopes. This is the right moment to start fighting! Start declaring blessings on your life, healing, prosperity and a long life, and all the solutions you need. Cry out to our sweet Lord, who is able to heal you in a moment and grant you a life of quality and a long life. I join you and I cover you and your liver, every single cell of it, with the blood of Jesus Christ. For His wounds you have been healed, and I cast out all the spirits of illness and I send them to the black hole they belong to. I declare you healed, I declare you will have a long life, a full blessing, new hope, new life and plenty of solutions and prosperity. Jesus has not forgotten you. He is right there, at your side. Do not fear! He is with you. You will see His powerful hand on your life. Do not despair.

Praying for you. I too have limitations that affect what I can do and may affect my liver. I have made that decision not to accept a transplant as well although for a completely different reason.

tammy, it seems to me that it's obviously okay to accept a donated organ. the only people who would even write an article to the contrary would probably have very strong, but very old-fashioned and wrong-headed ideas about ethics. sorry to insult them, but i think that's why you came up with those articles. only crazy people would tell you it's wrong to have a liver transplant.

although, this being said, i haven't actually read the articles, so let me do that. sorry, it just makes me angry when people make other people feel guilty for trying to meet their needs.

I too have chosen not to accept one, but for a completely different reason. I have no problem with people feeling that it is wrong, so long as they do not push the view on others in the same situation.

OK, I see the point about fetal tissue implants. But I simply disagree with the Renew America article. i would question that most doctors are criminals. most people are not criminals. this was an isolated incident or medical malpractice and is not at all common. just tell your doctor that you will only accept a liver transplant from an adult who consented to be an organ donor, not a fetus. that patient is doing what Jesus would do.

Those don't sound like the articles I meant. The ones I read talked about the concept of brain death. The term was invented solely as a justification for taking organs, and even now medical science still debates whether or not it is valid.

When someone is declared brain dead, most of their bodily functions continue to work. Their bodies regulate levels of water and produce urine. They can still digest food and metabolise nutrients. Their injuries heal. They often respond to surgical incisions, with muscle spasms and increase in breathing and heart rates, so organ donors have to be anaesthetised before the surgery. A "brain dead" woman can deliver a live baby up to 100 days later. Children who are brain dead continue to grow and will go through puberty. Sometimes residual functioning can still be detected by an EEG even after a person has been declared brain dead. There have been cases of people waking up hours after being declared brain dead. We have no way of knowing that the person would not have recovered in time.

If I agree to have a liver transplant, the doctors will take that liver from someone who is still alive, someone who has to be anaesthetised because they can probably still feel it happening. The doctor ends their life, maybe prematurely. They would have to end someone else's life to save mine.

Many times people will REQUESTS their organs be donated after death and once you are brain dead you are ONLY alive if you are hooked up to a machine, so that is not really living that is just the body working. Most people when they are brain dead WANT the plug pulled. Most people die and then have their organs transplanted meaning they are DEAD no chance of bring them back.
