  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you look on the top bar of this site you can see 'devotions' - click on it and look thru the devotionals - there's one called Quiet Moments for Couples - I like it. Be warned though - a lot are for spouses, which can be frustrating sometimes when you want something more for courting/engaged couples!

I know I was looking for something for me and my girlfriend tonight. Could not find a good one for dating couples. They had lots of them that fit married couples or other situations. Tommorow we are going to go look and see what they have together. But I wanted to get some idea of what we were looking at.

How about one on developing friendship. That is the area where both of us have difficulties. Both with each other and in general.

If you look on www.koorong.com.au, it's a Christian aussie bookstore - look for devotions and there are a couple there that would suit engaged/dating couples.

Also, as for books on friendship, I'd recommend boundaries (Cloud & Townsend), define the relationship (Jeramy and Jerusha Clark), and Safe People (Cloud and Townsend).

Tonight at supper, a couple who are recently engaged, told me about a book that they think every couple should read. Its called 10 Love languages or something like that... maybe its 5... but anyways. They are going to lend it to me. Its not a couples devo book, but it might be worth checking out anyways.

She told me that it helped them develop a really good strong relationship, to help them better understand eachother better. Why Laura would feel one way, and her fiance would feel another. Anyways, could be a load of ****, but might be worth checking out!

It is 5, Candice...any more than that and I'd be more than lost!! I haven't read it yet, but I was talking to one of my workmates last night at work about my relationship with Danie and he recommended that I read that book. I thought it was for married couples more than dating/courting ones, but I'm gonna give it a look at. He said it was pretty important that I find out what love language Danie "speaks" early on.

In terms of online devotions in particular, I haven't really explored the Web much, but something like "Devotions for Dating Couples" is probably the best hard copy format. There's also one called "Starting Out Together" by Norm Wright which could be a good one too.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but my mom read this book a few years ago and said she really liked it. Assuming it's the same one (I could be wrong), she also said it helped her understand a lot of other relationships too, not just her marriage.

That book is awesome! Helped my bf and I out a lot in understanding why, when one of thinks we are showing love to the other, the other one doesn't see it as 'love'.

The 5 languages are Words of Affimation, Quality Time, Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch.


I'm a 'quality time/physical touch ' person - so I feel love when he holds me, and takes time out to spend it alone with me. He is a 'gift/words' person - so he feels loved when I buy him a small, spontaneous gift, or when I tell him how I appreciate something he's done. That doesn't mean that we don't ENJOY the other stuff mentioned in the book when we do it, but it isn't how we really feel loved by the other person.

Made life a bit easier, knowing that!

The way I look at singleness is being unmarried...actually, it'd be a very interesting thread topic come to think of it! But yah, even though I'm in a relationship, I consider myself to be single in the context of not living with Danie and being able to provide for her as a married couple would.
