WHEN I was four years old, I buried an acorn near a rosebush in our yard. At that time I did not understand that the little seed could become a majestic tree. I was simply burying my treasure for safekeeping.
As time passed, the little acorn burst forth with new life. Protected by the rosebush, it withstood the freezing winter weather. It also found refuge from the powerful teeth of the lawn mower in the summer and from the rabbits that pruned it back in their search for food at the end of winter. And then, when the tree was big enough to make it on its own, my father removed the rosebush. In time, that little acorn grew into a strong and healthy oak tree.
Now that I'm older, I understand the significance of planting seeds of righteousness in the lives of others. Under God's protective hand those seeds hold the potential to burst forth into new life and produce good works for the kingdom of God.
