23 “If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
Hi all, I find this passage troubling given that many rape victims freeze rather than resist... Any tips on how to interpret this passage?
You may need to understand the cultural background of the Jews. Traditionally they are slaves, the Egyptians can take whatever they want. women thus cover themselves all the time and hide at home being protected by their parents. Crime is not high among the Jews themselves. Women go out to work only in rare situations, say all men of the family died. It is even rarer for unmarried girls to go out unprotected. More often, it's dating between a girl and a boy and later the girl's parents claim it a raping. Girls are taught to scream if it's a true raping, while Jews' children are mostly obedient as they are strictly educated so since early childhood.
